TSG2 Game in Progress

Hola - new to GOTM and this is my second game of CIV5. A couple of observations:
1. I need to be much more careful with my scouts. At around turn 150 it dawned on me the value of hunting down the natural wonders
2. I have had ZERO CTDs running Dx9 and with Steam in offline mode. Perhaps I can cange my 'autosave every 1 turn(s)' setting now
3. At around turn 175 I was cleaning up Elizabeth and took a city. Chose to make it a puppet but then the UI got stuck asking me to choose production. I was forced to Annex to get past it, and took an unhappiness hit (I was already pushing the happiness barrier) so spent the next 15 turns creating another happiness building to counter. In the end I shortcutted it and puppeted another city state to get an extra luxury resource - BUT - point is that bug changed my tactics...

Early days. Only about 100 turns in so far.
My major gripe was getting beaten to the Pyramids by 1 turn! (I know, the 'mids are not such a useful wonder as I'm used to in IV - but I am Egypt. I had to try!)
The early (tho vague) strategy was to look to science, keep my no. of cities small and manageable, and not pass up the opportunity of damaging the most progressive of my rivals.
I'm doing horribly on science - several of the AI have formed research agreements - but successfully joined Liz in a war against Ghandi. The Indians are no more...

This was my first time playing on King and also going for science victory. I assumed I should go for the Rationalism branch. You guys who are conquering both continents, how did you get the necessary happiness????
I made some nasty mistakes in my game. At one point, I suddenly noticed my empire had become extremely unhappy, and found to my horror that I had clicked to annex Paris instead of puppet!!! Well, with over 20 turns to build a courthouse and it was all downhill from there. I got beat to the Porcelain tower, and then got beat to Notre Dame (in a feverish effort to get happy again). I have all the luxuries I can get, having bribed city states. Game is going down the gutter

Wow, this has been the hardest game I've played to date, even though I've already won a game with a similar set up (King, Egypt, space race) etc handily.
I wasn't sure how to handle the start, so I figured I would try a GL slingshot for Theology but someone beat me to it. I didn't get a worker out until late so everything was delayed quite a bit. By the time I was able to start building some military units (I had 2 warriors and a scout), Elizabeth DoW on me
She took out my expansion to the northern river. Since then I've been trying to fight my way back but her longbowmen are decimating me and I simply don't have the production capabilities to do anything about it. Since turn 150 I've just been getting slaughtered. I stopped playing for now at Turn 201. I was able to take 2 cities but her empire is huge and her army is massively larger than mine. Kinda sucks. Any suggestions?

We just conquered Delhi, but an invisible Indian archer remains inside and is killing our units... 
Earlier, the Aztecs attacked Vienna with about 10 units, flanking it from all sides, but couldn't get through. On some turns, the city (with no unit in it) fired three shots, to three different tiles.

Still trying to get a hang of this game and I don't feel it's going very well.
Settled in place for wonder-building, capital-centered, GP strategy. Going to power it with maritime citystates. First mistake: trying to save up 500 gp right off the bat to get maritime food growth immediately, instead of leveraging the early gold on something more useful.
Builds were scout, worker, warrior, worker, settler.
Techs path AH, Mining, Masonry, Pottery, sailing, writing, philo, trapping, wheel, CS. Pretty random, I still haven't figured this game out.
Second mistake: I captured a worker from a distant NW city-state, and attacked Almaty for a second. This caused both of those city-states, and a third, to go into permawar with me. Not a good tradeoff since I had workers sitting on their thumbs for half the game. Whoops.
Tried for Stonehenge and thought about GLib and Oracle, but they were completed on T53, T64, and T81 respectively. Starting to learn what date wonders are completed by in Civ 5

200 turns in, and this one is heading for disaster.
As I said in my earlier report, I had joined Elizabeth to defeat Gandhi - taking Delhi, his only city.
Well, I used my small forces (about 4 units) to practice on some barbarians, and was just about to join forces with Montezuma in attacking the French (who were very weak) when dear Elizabeth backstabbed me and took Delhi off me. There was little I could do, with a single defender against her 4 or 5 attackers.
I spent the next little while tooling up with a bigger and better military, and went after Delhi again. It turned out that warfare is much harder - for me at least - on King level! She had a slight tech advantage and was using longswords to attack my swords and horses as they approached. I camped in the woods and built a stronger force - finally taking Delhi back!
Only the next thing that happened was Montezuma (dontcha know it) declared on me and came at Delhi - the central strategic point of this whole game, it seems - with about 10 units to my 5 defenders. He attacked with catapults, crossbows and longswords against my archers, swords and pikemen defences.
Delhi fell, and so did my next nearest city - Elephantine I think - so at turn 200 my tiny core empire of 3 cities is tucked away in the bottom corner being menaced by the Aztec might. Help! I've done something badly wrong!

I also got the oddity of Gandhi offering open borders insanely early. In Civ 4 I would imagine he had been popping techs from huts - but ruins don't do that in Civ 5 do they?
I'm just amazed to see such a different game to my attempt. You managed to avoid getting attacked! I must admit I wasn't trying to stay clear of violence, and the AI obliged by back-stabbing me all over the place. Did you decline any offers of secrecy pacts, or joining the AI in wars - or did you just never get these offers? I'd love to learn the way this diplomacy works. It all seems so dangerously unpredictable.
I will definitely play this one out again after I finish - focussing on one approach or another. Total war or total peaceful science.

I'm at a similar point now but an Era ahead -- I have Delhi and Monty is rushing me with an unending supply of musketmen and cannons. I have 4 units to defend my entire Civ.
I was in need of some resources and I liberated two city states Monty had captured, knowing full well that I'd be in for one heck of a fight. I managed to liberate them but wasn't expecting Napoleon and Liz to declare on me. It's fair to say that I'm doomed. Monty is the dominate force of the continent and I'm kicking myself for even messing with him (obviously).
Before that, I wasn't in a particularly good spot, I was beaten to every wonder I tried to build and my unhappiness was high through turn 50 to ~100.
This is my first Science attempt and my first try on King. Going to give it another go tonight. I find it hard to judge what sort of defense / offense is necessary and I might give total peace a shot on the next playthrough.
Definitely learned lots this game. I've only gone for Dom victories up till now, and I understand that strategy pretty well. It should be fun to play this again.

I tried to play quite passively in diplomacy, signing Pacts of Cooperation that were offered to me, and signing Open Borders with as many civs as possible, but steering clear of any requests to go to war, and most pacts of secrecy (I signed two in total I think, both with larger civs against weaker civs, as I figured that would make me look like I had friends in high places). Didn't built cities near other civs, wasn't agressive with any civ/city states, kept a moderately-sized military, usually ahead in tech compared to most other civs, so it was probably a combination of not annoying anyone and having a few troops that stopped anyone getting any ideas. Oh, and from fairly early on in the game I was never top on score, I think I was 4th/5th for most of the game. People trying to work out how diplomacy works in this game seem to think that being top on score makes other civs more likely to DoW you.
From the looks of other people's games, it's much faster to just go all out war and conquer your entire continent (bar city-states) into puppets which you can use for beakers, but you have to make sure you don't annoy everyone at once and end up getting teamed up on by other civs, try to take them one at a time. I'll try playing with a strategy like this at some point.

Very interesting. Particularly since I was just looking through the few screenshots I took during this game, and found one at turn 112 (75BC) where I was clear score leader!

Aye, I think if you're topping the scores, you need to be topping military too, or at least be close to the top, or the other civs get nasty

Like some of you, I failed my game (being my first on King, and also first going for a science victory). I manged to conquer Ghandi, Monty, and Napoleon, but leaving Elizabeth alone so long allowed her to become a monster. She DOW'd me and a mass of English units poured over my border in multiple places like a flood over the land. Sounds like some of you had similar experiences, hope this helps.
I decided to play again to see how much better I could learning from my mistakes (won't be submitting, obviously, just wanted to see if I could improve). I don't think knowledge of the map helped me too much (couldn't remember where ruins were or anything).
This time, I settled a city to the south of Thebes to gather horses more quickly. Actually turned out to be a decent spot. I DOW'd the AI's in order of proximity and threat level (meaning Elizabeth, Monty, Napoleon, Ghandi). For the first three, I only crippled them (not conquering them completely, just the capital and another city), took everything in a peace treaty, and moved on to the next. This way, no AI was left alone long enough to become big. Going horseman meant moving across the map quickly.
Happiness has been a huge juggling act. I made sure to ally with CS's that had luxury resources I needed. Fortunately, puppets like to build happy buildings. I've spammed TP's and gold is rolling in, and even bought a colosseum in one of my cities. Eventually, I got the Forbidden palace and that one SP from Order, together reducing unhappiness from number of cities to 0. Beelining to Biology and then coming back for Banking helped get to this.
Things going VERY smoothly now as you might imagine. A second military pass has conquered everybody on the continent. Happiness is high enough for me to annex my biggest cities. I can smell victory. I think it's fair to say I learned a lot from my first game

@DonChipotle After losing my first game, I'm taking a similar approach on my 2nd playthrough. I rushed horsemen/pikemen and took out each civ easily. I'm debating using the Infinite City Sprawl approach (see strategy forum) just to play around with it.

while I do feel fairly comfortable at King level I have never played for a scientific victory before with Civ5 so making a plan should help me focus a bit here
Even with Egypts wonder bonus it is very unlikely that I will get all the wonders I want, so I will try to focus on those that give a one time bonus for the first civ to build them - basically the Oracle and GL - the others can be taken by force for their benefits later on (will settle right on the marble for the additional wonder bonus without getting masonry due to this, too).
In addition I want a nice slingshot to get better value for getting allied with the CS, so building (most likely buying) a library in order to produce a GS is a high priority, too (most likely will try to slingshot for acoustics).
In order to makemy city still grow and get an even large bonus to wonder construction 2 policies in aristocray are the priorites for SPs.
After the basics (scout, worker) a warrior will be build since I will try to get some nice puppets or potential production cites in the long run (our starting location does not look great for production).
Next up will be a beeline for astronomy since I hope to take out most civs (if there are any) on my starting continent and need trade partners.
Then I will try to get more puppets/set up my production sites and get into heavy research mode (trade posts for + 1 science) while trying to keep my happiness above -10.
Well, lets see if this plan is able to survive contact with the enemy at least somewhat intact

Wow, this is mostly turning into the disaster report thread, huh? It really is tremendously comforting to know I'm not alone: chalk me up as another victim of the English juggernaut. I tried the strategy of not expanding much beyond the starting peninsula, and just cowering in denial while Liz gobbled up everyone else on the continent, starting with the city states (which left me with quite a problem trying to get hold of luxuries).
I actually haven't played beyond Liz's dow, and the arrival on my borders of her vast army of longbows, muskets and rifles - my military consists of about one chariot, one pike and one longsword, and I have 4 cities. I'll post the defeat save when I've summoned the courage to let it play through.
My second Civ4 GOTM was a conquest loss to barbs, so this result will actually be a kind of step up for me!
