TSG42 Game in Progress

I take notes. :)

My first scout got upgraded to Atlatlist from a ruins, that's cool. I gave it new orders and built another Scout, as I want that +2 visibilty. So much easier to get now that a chance meeting with a barbarian unit is no longer instant death.

Will report later. :D

LOL, after I set production focus with 3 citizens and was set on zero food during opponents move civ suddenly decided to reassign workers so 1 of citizens died.

The next turn after city grew back to 3 two barbarians moved exactly to only 2 food producing tiles so unlucky bastard died again.

Never had worse luck.
I almost had the same thing happening, but remembered in time to change the focus to food when a Brute was about to step on that river jungle tile we worked.

If you fix the tiles that citizens are working, changing focus won't have any effect, except when a tile becomes unavailable or the city grows.

I moved my warrior sw to recon, then decided to settle in place.

production
Started with an atlantlist > one turn monument > pyramid > finish monument > started The Great library > worker > The great Pyramids > finished great library. (Theology turn 74. I love their year annotation system)
bought worker and two atlantlist when i sold luxuries.

Relations
I had pretty good relations with everybody except that %^&^%&$* Gustaph who backstabbed me on turn 97. He earlier even attacked Lisbon and conquered it. Maria Theresa is AFRAID of me, and Boudicca is NEUTRAL.

Religion
I took Monument to gods belief, and with my 1st prophet Pagodas and Ceremonial burial (for happines)

Social policies.
I started with Tradition and Aristocracy for wonder bonus, and aftewards took Liberty path. Republic, Citizenship and Collective rule. On the 99th turn i completed Collective rule for a free settler, and on turn 100 i have four cities.

Wonders

Palenque 7 citizens
The great library
The great mosque of Djenne (GE from Mayan cycle)
The Pyramids
National college

Tical 5 ctizens
The Oracle (finished in 6 turns)

Chichen Itza 1 citizen

Uxcal 1 citizen

City States
Quebec, Cape town and Cahokia gave me nice quests so I was allied with them for some time. I didn't on purpose exchanged embassies, so two CS asked me to find Celts (+30 influence)

Plans
I will now try to repell Gustaph, than raze his one expansion city, puppet his capital and liberate Lisbon he conquered. I have to get my happiness ASAP. And i have to start building trading posts for future money to buy CS favor.

Settled in place. Built scout, atlatlist, pyramid, settler. Tech order was Pottery, AH, Calendar, Writing, Mining, BW (popped Sailing from a hut). Took the jungle culture pantheon. Grew quickly to 4 cities (2 bought from luxury sales) using Tradition opener, RHS Liberty (for worker + GA) then complete Tradition. City 2 was N for wine-copper-river (the whales were nabbed by CS before I arrived so settled inland, grabbing extra wheat), City 3 was S on river covering marble-spices and City 4 on W coast for silver-truffles-mountain-stone. Used GL to jump to Theology around turn 70. Was tempted to really expand given the great land on rivers to extreme N, S and W (beyond Aus and Swe caps), but simultaneous DoW from those two provided a different expansion route. I am now sole owner of my sub-continent (4 cities + 3 puppets) and hold the land-bridge to the Celts. I took Tithe, Pagodas, Mosques and 33/66% religion spread for my beliefs. Did some barb-hunting to please CS but saw fewer barbs than I was expecting (I did not take the Honor opener). Squeezed in the Patronage opener before hitting Renaissance and Rationalism. Have built lots of happiness and commerce wonders, so rolling in both. Met the other Civs using a Great Admiral. I suspect I may play this out without signing a single RA:- I have the PT but I am so far ahead of the AI in tech that the cost/benefit for effectively 5 turns of research is questionable (I only have one DoF in any case, being a “Warmonger”:i.e. finishing wars started by others!). If I have sufficient culture, I might try to develop Patronage into Scholasticism prior to completing Rationalism (the 50% RA bonus is fairly lame if you don’t sign any!). Very interesting setup.

Jungle gives 2 science with a University, so we decided to keep it all untouched except for where it covered the Spices. :)

Naturally, that meant a need for good productive locations for other cities.

We sent our intitial Warrior to explore east where he found just such a spot, as well as various City States, but no ruins at all. To our pleasant surpise, some were still there in the south when we got our Scout out, which was not our first build. So we still got some goodies, including Calendar when it was already half researched, and an upgrade to - of course - Atlatlist. :p

Another conscious choice was not to prioritize a Pyramid, since it was unclear at the start which pantheon we wanted. When we finally got to choose one on turn 28, we had seen the vastness of the desert and chose Desert Folklore (again).

So, on turn 60, we have 3 cities: Palenque on the starting tile, which will be a center of learning, then Tikal nearby on the lake, and thirdly Chichen Itza a mere 4 tiles away from Stockholm, on the river and overlooking that desert. It has much potential!

Like others did, we bought these first Settlers with gold from luxury and horse sales, before the raging barbarians could become an obstacle. But we didn't do that so early that the empire would become unhappy. Tikal just missed stealing the Whales from Rio de Janeiro, but perhaps a later Great General can rectify that. :mischief:

We still want a few more cities though. It's a small map, so a total of 5 or 6 seems optimal, provided they all have luxuries.

With the early expansion to more cities in mind, a Granary was not a priority and with a Pyramid also not at the top of the list we didn't have to start on Pottery right way and could research Animal Husbandry first. That helped, although we had to buy both horse tiles first.

Taoism was founded this very turn and we could still have our preference for this game. A fresh Settler from Collective Rule is on its way to a mountain location in the southeast. And so far we have killed 18 barbarian units. The City States love us, especially Ragusa which is our first ally.

So, basically, all is going to plan. :D

Three more Mayan cities were founded. Uxmal at the Marble and Silver can have an Obseravatory later on. Tulum is positioned on the landbridge to the Celts, blocking any ideas of aggressive expansion they may have had in our direction. And finally Copan is west of Sweden, with Salt and yet more Horses.

Sweden did not like that so much and declared war, marching towards Copan. We upgraded two Altatlists to Composite Bowman and a mere five turns later they ran home and sued for peace. :D

The Maya did not settle on the river west of Palenque because it offered no new luxuries. Six cities seems the max if we want them all to keep growing, and we do. For the same reason, we don't want to puppet anyone, even though both Sweden and Austria are easy prey.

Neither did we enhance our religion yet. Instead, we sent forth 3 missionaries, to make optimal use of Tithe and Religious Community.

The first Great Person from the Maya Long Count was a Great Engineer on turn 86. It rushed Petra in Chichen Itza. :)

We bought a University in Palenque this turn and if the calculations are correct, the natural appearance of a Great Scientist will occur on the same turn that the Maya ability kicks in again. The previous turn, the capital completed the National College. So, things should go fast from here on. :scan:

After the discovery of Optics our Scout swam past the Celts, and found the remainings civs. Greece and Siam dislike each other but both are friendly towards us, while England is neutral. They don't have much to trade. So many sea resources, all unexploited.

A first Golden Age from happiness is already behind us.

Why did you started with AH instead of Pottery? It makes no sense to me.
The question is, rather, why not? Pottery was not needed immediately, nor was Mining or Calendar (after Pottery), and there is always a good chance of finding horses nearby! :)

Animal Husbandry is on the path to The Wheel, so it's never wasted unless you need something else more urgently. In most games you do (usually the aforementioned Pottery), so we don't see it as much as in the early days of Civ5. But if you can afford to spend the time, definitely research Animal Husbandry first.

Things have been peaceful on our half of the world. We are by now ages ahead of the AI, of course.

Very cruel, by the way, to hide Mt. Kailash so. Several City States wanted a new natural wonder and this was the only one left.

Turn 117 was our best moment so far when Palenque produced two Great Scientists (one natural and one from the Maya Long Count) and a Great Prophet on the same turn. So from then on, we had two Academies. The Great Prophet (from faith) enhanced our religion.

With the academies up and Rationalism opened, science goes faster than ever. Palenque is of course working all those jungle tiles and bought a Public School the turn it became available. The pace being what it is, the capital had better hurry to produce a second Great Scientist! ;)

On turn 133 we took a Great Merchant from the Long Count. Perhaps a Great Artist was better to start a new (until the end?) Golden Age immediately. Instead that now began six turns later, from the last Liberty policy.

Although trading opportunities remain poor, cash is plentiful, thanks to Tithe and the road network. So Palenque can keep working those jungle tiles and simply buy what it needs. :)

Techwise, we picked up Chemistry and Fertilizer. These are off the path to Globalization, but the advantages more than compensate that.

Our cities are now of size 25, 13, 21, 10, 8, 13 (90).

About to continue this one on T136 - saving now before taking any break, it does help with not having to reload from an autosave after the fairly likely crash after getting back.

We puppeted Vienna around T110 and after having build the NC 2 more cities were founded.

Tulum (SE of the capital, just at the start of the river) between 1 spice, 1 marble and Copan at the hill next to the sugar on the small peninsular leading to the Celts (3 cows and 2 fish should make this a fast grower).

Since we feel that this game is a mixture between science and culture (need to finish Rationalism in time with Oxford and get a GE from opening up Order in between as well for a shot at a finish around T200) the 2 conquered capitals will remain puppets.

Our troops are currently heading towards the Celts who are building the Great Mosque, we will have to prevent their foul religion from spreading towards our lands - preferably after having signed DoFs/1 round of RAs with the other nations.

Astronomy will be finished in 1 turn allowing the Great Prophet which will soon spawn from faith to spread the one true religion to the other part of the continent.

Our Petra city is slowly but surely turning into a real powerhouse (due to population) and Uxmal is doing well on the construction front.

Some stats from T136 (during a GA):

+267 beakers, +150 gold, +74 culture, +40 faith each turn

Palenque: 17pop, 34prod, 26gold, 122sci, 14 faith, 16 culture - building Alhambra (1 turn left)
Tikal (Petra): 18pop, 35prod, 42g, 48sci, 4f, 9c - Notre Dame (5 left)
Chichen Itza (Celtic landbridge): 7pop, 23prod, 17g, 12sci, 4f, 11c - university(2)
Uxmal (hill/river north): 10pop, 37prod, 17g, 17sci, 4f, 6c - Sistine Chapel (6)
Tulan (river SSE of cap): 3pop
Copan (Celtic peninsular): 4pop

After reading what Ribannah wrote I know that I am already behind in the race for the quickest win, but still think a T200 finish is possible ;)

I would say you are right - If not for the increasing cost for founding a pantheon.
Delaying faith for 9 turn can increase the delay in getting a pantheon by any time, in higher levels you could fully lose it.

Have to agree here, ending up with the 2nd religion (jungle was taken by the Celts) despite getting pottery early will cost me a couple of early social policies in the end, making it much harder to finish pre-T200.

In a science / diplomatic game for speed, you don't want to have a lot of culture early on, because that will make the Rationalism policies too expensive. We were never going to take the jungle pantheon. :)

My first 79 turns (includes 5.5ish pictures):
Spoiler :
Settled on the spices. Feel like I want the hill for a mine later in the game (however I lose the ability to build a water mill as well). Anyway, it gives me an instant lux with Calender to sell. Here's my bought settler on t20 :D

Considered Pagodas for a moment... however I'd rather want to spent my faith on GP as Maya plus I guess I'll be happy enough with all the befriended and allied city-states throughout the game.

Now a quite risky move, since I wasn't sure it would work:
(settling next to the barb camp, that 4 CS want to see destroyed)

Luckily it does work! (note however I didn't get the 25 gold :crazyeye:)

GL finished on t66, granting me Theology, which as a result granted me a free GP on t72. Funnily that fell together with the Golden Age from Representation (Liberty).
At first I wanted to chose a Great Admiral, however I was afraid it would spawn in the small lake near Rio. So I instead took a Scientist first, who cleared a riverside March for me while planting an Academy there:

T79. Both Gustavus and Boudicca have been denouncing me on this turn. Maria Theresa though must die too, because well... she's Austria! Seems like it will become a pretty bloody game...

Fun game so far!

Am I the only one who immediately took out Austria?

I saw Austria, and all those City States right next door to her, and I thought: "If I let her live, she'll diplomatically marry me right out of the game."

A few unique units and a couple of warriors made quick work of her.

I'm on my way to take Stockholm now. The, I'll be at 4 cities after making 1 settler and moving down the Tradition policies.

Long time reader, first time poster on these boards. These TSG games seem a lot of fun and so I finally got my account.

I started off with a fairly traditional 4 city tradition opening. Raging barbs was really helpful as it allowed me to resell luxes at least 3 times after pillaging, but due to the relatively low difficulty the never really got dangerous. I bought 3 settlers and 3 workers, hard-producing only one of each.

Shortly after I finished NC with 4 cities up at about Turn 90 and started raising my happiness towards 0 again, I was DOWed by Austria and Sweden, instantly putting my happiness in the positives again (I sold my unique luxes to them). I quickly upgraded my Atlatists into CB and by now, Turn 100, 2-3 turns after DOW, there's no sight of invaders.

I went Tradition and just finished it and will now go Patronage. No social policy plans after that, because I typically don't get much more then those 12 polices by the end of the game.

My goal will be to finish pre T300. Yeah, a full hundred turns lower ambitions than some of you, still, I never finished a game pre T300, although I never play easier than King normally.

Edit: Got a GS for settling at Turn 82 from The Long Count. Will now go Great Admiral to start exploring overseas.

Sorry that my "in-progress" report is coming so late. Last post before me was five days ago -- and the thread is still sticky as I'm writing -- so I hope I'm not bumping it too badly. I just started this game on Saturday, one day before the deadline. I used to enjoy the Civ4 GOTMs, although I never finished one soon enough to submit it. This is only my 3rd Civ5 game ever and 2nd v.5 GOTM (I also did TSG1) -- in other words, expect mistakes. Anyhow...

My initial plan was this: 1) REX to 3 to 4 cities and build them up bit first, before starting to go wide. Look for high-gold sites, as earning money to buy friends will be important. 2) Build a small military & make friends with CS's by dealing with barbs. 3) Beeline Theology with some worker techs thrown in as needed. 4) First policy choice would be Liberty, followed by Patronage when available.

Then I met Maria-Theresa, and my plans changed. I decided to take her out ASAP without even waiting for Iron. In retrospect and after reading this thread, I think I may have over-reacted a bit. It might have been better to build up and out a little more, and wait for Swords and Crossbows. In that case, maybe I could have gotten by with fewer units, or at least been better able to afford them.

I bought a worker in Pelanque so I could mine the grassland hill, and I began building Atlatlists and Spears. With the free Collective Rule Settler, I founded Tikal between Pelanque and Vienna; after an initial Pyramid, it also began military production. I got my free Worker with Citizenship, and took another one from some barbs. Later, Maria kindly donated a 4th Worker to the Mayan cause.

I declared war on turn 77, attacking Vienna with 4 Atlatlists, two Spearmen and a Warrior. Another Spearman had just left Pelanque en route to Vienna, but the war was all but over before he got there. Vienna fell on turn 81 and became a puppet. I continued the war for one more turn to finish off an Austrian warrior on the hill west of the city. Yet, M-T was still in the game; I remembered having earlier seen an Austrian Scout near Sweden. I made peace in exchange for all of her gold.

I'm now at turn 85. The war has been rather costly for the empire. I was running deficit spending for several turns, and have just finally got my finances back into the black. I gifted a couple units to CS to help balance the budget. I only have three cities, one of which is a puppetted Vienna, and they have not been built up much. Tikal is still languishing at only 2 citizens, as I had them focused on production. I assume that I am probably behind on tech as well, but I don't really know. On top of that, Gus and Boudi are both hostile and bad-mouthing me constantly. My Military Advisor says that Gus is stronger than me, and Boudi is about equal. Maria is still skulking around out there somewhere with her lonely little Scout. I expect from time to time, she will peek out of whatever god-forsaken rat-hole she's hiding in so she can denounce me.

Plan now is 1) prepare to hold off attacks from Gus & Boudi which I am sure will be coming very soon, 2) build up my two cities, 4) settle one or two more cities, and 4) prepare to annex Vienna (build happiness and research Mathematics for a Courthouse). I am about 10 turns from a Prophet, 11 turns from Theology, and on this turn -- right now -- I can finish Liberty and get another GP. I'm thinking GE and try to rush a Wonder, but I haven't really decided yet.
