TSG60 Opening Actions thread

Well, my first GOTM too. I am an immortal player so this is quite fitted for me.

Gone liberty, early pantheon with +1 production boats. Placed my cities to abuse free harbor and the pantheon as much as possible.

Gone wonderwhore... Why not? I don't make many wonders on Immmortal (if any at all if I am not quite ahead on tech) Gone to the low profile ones. I didn't miss great lighthouse and stonehenge, going to get colosus.

I also managed to do an assault of CBs and get a city from Spain while going hard on wonders, Now his capital will succumb easily. She gone after me after I settled my fourth city near her. I has only 4 archers and 2 melee, but 2 more archers coming.

gotm_60_T100.jpg

After CBs I'm going to education. With so many fishing boats my cities are growing like crazy, nothing to shame the immortal AIs. I'm managing happiness quite well.

I build up myself and go with all when I get Artillery, so now is time to do some infrastructure and a few more low profile wonders. :mischief:

I should have gone to England, she's mean on medieval, but I can't do everything, wonderwhoring doesn't help playing aggresively.

T 114

3 cities up and running

held of DOW from Spain and have beaten her army back, unable to take any city ftm. Spain build GW, how annoying…. Conquest is not my cup of tea i think, it mightily annoys me, i do not see the point. oh well, will still continue to see where this will lead.

Lacking in science, starting position is so good and yet, i think i under perform dramatically.

Elephants are underwhelming at best.

Should have played a science game and taken over the world with stealth bombers

At the start of the game i decided to risk moving my settler south one space to see if i could get anything better; and luckily i did by getting an extra two cows and a deer. I decided to head to pottery first so i could get a religion to so i could "Convert" my fellow Civs and assuage the unhappiness that would come with the process. Why they are so unhappy with the process i don't know. :shifty: I took God of the sea as my pantheon to help with production as i am sure many others did.

As i scouted south and found Spain i knew war would come sooner then i expected. Just as i researched archery i saw Spain bringing a settler in the direction of Carthage. Well i would have non of this and declared war with my two warriors and lone scout-archer. I took my time taking Spain out as i wanted to try out the elephant units since i was getting tired of composite bow rushes. I also kind of gave up scouting to focus on the war, and in hindsight i should of just continued with scouting so i could plan my conquest, however domination is not my favorite victory condition so i am not used to thinking ahead in that regard.

Around turn 80 Madrid fell and low and behold it was Spain's only city because for some reason she was determined to throw settlers at me. After that i marched west and found London. I declared war, which took some time as i wished to build up my military, and around turn 115 London fell and once again was her only city.

Genghis was wiped out by France at some point and Songhai has been at war with them since. Past that i have just been building up my military preparing to bulldoze through the Pangaea. I probably am taking too much time as i am used to playing on Epic speed.

My capital as of turn 160

I realize now that i am going quite slow for a domination victory on a Pangaea but as I enjoy long games I am happy with this.

I went Pottery-> Sailing. Meanwhile I discover Spain nearby. To have someone who expand fast close to u is the best u can imagine for agressive start. I went for construction building boats and archers. I took 2 sience as pantheon which I believe is unbalanced. (This gives you a chance to not build libraries early) Around 55-60 turn I declared war on Isabella having only 4 composites and 1 trireme. First city was taken and retaken by Spain several times. (However i didnt loose units ofc) I continued building composites. By the way this war was very easy since her cities mostly are not on hills and there are a lot of planes. After taking her second city war becomes easy. I built Oracle and head to CB. Spain capital was down around turn 90, then I finished her last city, conquer Valetta, upgraded to CB and took London. During these wars I have often negative happiness, but this is nit that bad. Machu pichu was built with engineer.

Now is turn 110 and I suppose this game is already done since my score is much bigger the best comp (530 vs 350), soon CB will get sweet double strike and range promotions.

The only problem is to decide if I should spawn a huge army and start several wars at the same time or should I go (as I often do) science?
Should I conquer city by city or should I focus just on capitals?
Should I go for cannons and artillery or galeases and fregates?
Time is money, I appreciate any advices.

Xbows (especially with range or logistics) + knights will be enough, if you aim for fast victory.

Hi you all.
I've played Civ 2 Game of the game, some 10 years ago. I'd like to try it now again with the latest Civ G&K, but...
After wondering for about 20 minutes here in the forums, i can't find the file...
Where can i download the May-2013 Game of the month intial file, for Civ 5 G&K?
Please help. :)

Oh, and by the way: what does TSG stands for?

:thanx: marekb

The initial save file, along with the details for the game, are always in the Announcement thread, this month's game is linked above. Best of luck.

Thank you both (marekb and leif erikson) for your help, especially for letting me know it was on the Annoucement thread, because i checked a few, but not that one... :P Now iKnow. :)

By the way, since i couldn't find the game file i started a Hall of Fame game. I *did* read the instructions, but I don't remeber reading that i had to install any mod to validate my game.
However, now, after reading above I'm wondering if i have to download and install that buffy mod (for which you have a link above) to validate my game. Is that it? If it is i will have to restart a new game...
Thanks again.

For Civ V there is no HOF mod at this point. For Civ V HOF requirements, you can browse the HOF forum -- very informative.

Hi, Thanks.
I had already browsed the forum and read the most part of the sicky threads, but since it's impossible to read everything (hundreds of posts!) in a hirt notice and I wanted to start a game, I'm always affraid I might have missed something important and since people here speak a lot using acronyms and abbreviations I always wonder if i got it right... :)

We try to make the Announcement threads a one-stop place to provide info for each game, that is why there is so much repetition in them, and they contain the starting location screen shot and the link to the save file. If you have a question about something you do not understand, please post it in the announcement thread and we will get to it as soon as one of us is on the forum. Thanks.

- How did the terrain affect your early decisions?

- How did you use your early UU's? Did you find them effective?

Settled in place.
Warrior went SE and saw river, but i decided to stay on coast due to being Carthage.

Scout-scout-granary(bananas)-shrine(God of the Sea)-monument.
Slow cultural start due to delayed monument.
Went Tradition but was so slow culturally i only needed to annex one city to delay getting into Rationalism after Tradition finished.

Got lots of ruins due to two scouts!

Stole worker from Spain early; we remained at war till i finally built up enough archers to upgrade to CBs.

UUs = useless. Realizes was Pangea of some kind quickly enough, and no coastal caps = no navy needed.
The one [too expensive] Elephant i built died in my first war with Lizzy.

Just took Barcelona (annexed later) and soon after i take Madrid.

Not so happy with the game though as my teching and production is way behind what i'd like.
It's been extremely slow going in war due to not having enough units early on.

One nice thing has been CS. I've spent a lot of time doing quests as well as handing them gold, and have been friendly/allied with many more than usual. Mercantiles for the happiness and Militaristic for the units as my production is bad, but economy good.

Future stuff do not read till t200+:
Spoiler :
Lizzy attacked Spain while i was finishing them off, and of course she took on Spain's last crappy city.

I went to war with England next over Hanoi (she'd captured it early in the game), but i did not have enough units, and did not produce them fast enough, so i had to make favorable peace for a while and waited till Artillery.

I then liberated Spain's Seville city and later gifted them one of England's cities.
Presently around t195, Spain and and i are actually friends, with an RA signed, and she doesn't hate me too much other than taking her cap obviously.

T150 i am barely tech leader. Runaway Genghis is gobbling up cities everywhere and teching like mad.

England was the other semi-runaway with a MASSIVE cap i finally took t193
http://ense7en.com/pics/civ5/gotm60/t193 london bridge is falling down-0000.jpg

Genghis has already taken Siam's cap and has been at war or hated by pretty much everyone on and off all game (and doing great).
I've been friends with him and signed a couple RAs, but that will have to end soon.

I sadly have to go toward France next. Then either Ottomans or Genghis, and will likely save Songhai till the end as he's harmless and may get taken out by Genghis before i get to him anyway.

It's going to be a long slog with no fast finish times (obviously, as i am t200 and still four caps to go.) I just hope i can actually deal with Genghis as he has wildly better production than me with a billion cities. Praying for uranium as i'm going to need it.

t84, just took London and already have Madrid, annexed both to build library

went Liberty and settled the free settler east near the crabs

sailing -> CB -> writing -> XB

scout x2 -> granary -> workboat x3 -> archers (buy library, buy aquaduct)
2nd city: workboats -> granary -> library

wanted to get the GS from liberty to bulb Machinery, but culture is too slow

didnt really bother for pantheon but met some reliCS and chose GOTS

building GW in capital, so others won't get it

I wasn't intending to attack Izzy so early, but then her Settler decided to just sit out in the open next to my warrior, so she copped it sweet. Archers easily took care of her units that were floating around, upgraded them to CBs as soon as Construction came in, then rolled through Barcelona and Madrid with ease. Left her alive with Seville since I wanted to be able to trade with the other AI still.

- How did the terrain affect your early decisions?

The start meant that I was going to prioritise the God of the Sea pantheon. The proximity of Vatican City meant I comfortably achieved that.

- What were your initial priorities?

Went Liberty because I expect to have quite a lot of cities since it's a domination game. Scout -> Monument -> Shrine -> Warrior -> Work Boats was the build order, my first worker was bought in Utique so I could improve the cows. Didn't need a worker early in Carthage. Knew that Izzy would attack if I left her alone so I prepared for that, and was willing to take a risk when I saw the settler wandering unattended.

- What tech path did you follow and why?

Sailing for the crabs and fish, Animal Husbandry for the heap of cows down where I'd settle Utique, Archery to defend against Izzy.

- Were there any early wars and who started them?

Apart from the aforementioned war vs Izzy, Nappy ate some CS, Genghis took a city from Rammy, and everything else was minor squabbles.

- How did you use your early UU's? Did you find them effective?

I used a Quinquireme to take Barcelona, and a Forest Elephant to kill a barbarian camp. Pretty much non-factors though.
