Whenever I go to war, I gather several allies so I don't have to put as much effort into building the military and could have the AI asking for peace after 20 turns (don't like breaking alliances). Then, the AI gets allies. Then, one of the "newer" enemies allies with one of my allies and declares war on another one of my allies. My allies even have trade embargos against me.

(I know I didn't explain this well enough. I suck at writing. If anyone that writes well and understands what I am trying ti say, please help me out here.)

Now, Does this happen to anyone else?

I understand. Happened to me before, that is before I applied the 1.21f patch. It's generally world war when I'm involved in any wars.

Just remember one thing, keep your enemies close and allies closer. :)

Something just like that happened in a game of mine. Me and the French allied against the Americans, English, and Germans. Me and the Americans are on two medium islands, while the other three share one big one. After about 30 turns, everyone signed peace, and the French and the English immediately ganged up on the Germans, who allied with the Americans again for help. I didn't want to see the English get too powerful so I declared war on them but didn't ally with anyone else. So now I am in the middle of that little conflict.

I definitely find the AI to be much more fickle and unpredictable than in Civ2, with stuff like this happening fairly often. It isn't always that complicated, but the rapid shifting of alliances and hostilities is something I have been forced to adapt to. It's all a little too much like 1984 if you ask me...

The bad thing here is that you`ll get a HUGE rep hit for breaking alliances - despite the fact that it is the AI forcing you to.... :(

You know what's even worse? when you get a rep hit via MPP (Oh, you betrayed them, you are a treacherous leader, oh, Vader can't compete with you in evil, you...)

I think Stalin said it something like this: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. :)

I've gone into war after one of my allies declared war against a civilization. He apparently needed me to defeat an army. After I defeated the army, and got my own great leader. The ally reached a peace treaty with that civ. I kept pressing my offensive until I reached a defensible position (mountain range). My ally became annoyed. Two hundred years later I reduced the rival to rubble.
