Hello,

A great community. I was introduced to CIV as teen, I'm 32 now...and been a fanatic ever since. CIV IV seems to be the best of the bunch, but I am beyond frustrated with my inability to get it to work on my relatively new laptop, purchased last year.

So here's the deal...I've been through all the posts and basically confused myself with all the suggestions. I am a smart guy and can follow directions, but not hardware literate at all, and having trouble with some of the more esoteric details.

I will link to my computer so you know what system I have.

I am willing to reinstall and start over for a solution , so you can begin your solution with an uninstall and reinstall.

I used the .dll error fix and it got my game running when I installed (again). But as usual when my empire got large and complicated here came this error:

File:\source\main\civilization4\SDKs\gamebryo2_0\corelibs\Nidx9renderer\Nidx9vbmanager.cpp,line:1019

I know that this has been discussed. I reduced my settings, tried downloading newer/different drivers and am now frustrated. Do I need 2MB of RAM instead of 1MB or can I get this working.

You all seem very helpful here, but to get someone motivated I would like to offer a $20 reward to the person who gives me the clear instructions to get it working, payable upon completion of a successful game. I can pay thru Paypal or Ultimate Bet or Full Tilt Poker, for any of you who like to play online too.

Thanks...

Matt

Dosn't matter how good your processor is if you only have one gig of ram. Try 2 and you will be fine Otherwisr the game will always suffer in later turns if you choose huge maps.

Sorry I have no trick so no monies for me, still I say best advice is put the cash in your pc :)

I downloaded from omegadrivers.net, installed patch 1.51 , which is supposed to be the best patch if you have graphic memory issues according to 2K, someone please feel free to correct me if 1.74 is really the best patch.

I also upgraded to 2MB of memory from 1MB and still the game crashes on the lowest graphic setting while playing full screen.

Late last night I tried playing in a window. We will see if it works.

All in all, I am not happy. I don't believe that the game will work once I move into more modern times. I don't mind if it crashes after 20 turns or whatever, just not every turn.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try? The reward offer most defintitely still stands...

I got fixed same kind of problem by reinstalling my directx, downloading the newest version. But i guess that you have already done this? ;)

And reinstalling whole windows might work too. ;)

Latest update:

Virtual Memory! check that section of the fix it page. I adjusted my min to my max following the directions and I have not had a crash. It is only 1100 AD, so we'll see how it does going forward, but so far so good.

Still not working. The upping min to max memory did not fix it. Playing in a window does not fix it. Latest driver has been installed and running on directx 9.0c.

Apparently this game is just not well made.

Can anyone suggest whether buying a newer version or Beyond the Sword will correct my crashing?

I'm about to put it away with a sob and wait for CIV V.

W/ some help from Ori , I played last night for over an hour or 10 + turns probelm free.

I downloaded 1.61 and modded my ini file to reduce graphic memory load.

Lets see how it works as we move into the industrial age tonight...

I hope this is the last post on this thread. I completed my first game last night! A Diplomatic victory in 1956.

No crashes after these fixes:

-Upgraded to 2MB memory

-Downloaded drivers for x1400 Radeon from omegadrivers.net

-Installed 1.61 patch

-Modified ini file to reduce graphic load (see Ori post for 0/1 and what to turn off)

-Played in window in 1024x768 mode (or whatever the lowest on game was) and also set my desktop to same settings

-Set in-game settings to low, kept zoom and unit movement ( I like to watch them fight)

It took a long time, but I hope I am all set...Thanks to Ori, and everyone else who took the time to respond and help out us Civ fiends...
