Ucel02 - Rulers of the world

Basically, yes. It's a very good strategic location for going after either Peter or Monty (in the future, should we need to) and, being a former capitol, is a good all-around city.

Pre-turns. Decide to go with the original plan - get Delhi and hold onto it. I predict that it's going to be tough and that there won't be much opportunity to go after the south lands, but...

Will also bring the roads to Delhi.

IBT: Peter moves his horse archers back into Delhi. Attacks the stack but we win.

1290AD Beshbalik: Crossbow - Maceman. Decide to go for Engineering to give us the +1 Road movement (never noticed that in Civ IV before...)

IBT: Horse archers attack our armies but LOSE!!! Ha ha ha

1300AD Move troops closer to Delhi. There are too many strong armies in there at the moment, but I believe it's the majority of Peter's force.

IBT: Horse archers and swordsmen from Delhi attack our stack. Both lose. Mental note - cross the river before attacking...

1310AD Great Prophet born in Karakorum. Don't know what to do with him yet... Our catapults can't bombard. Anybody know why? Crossed the river

IBT: Nada

1320AD Ahhh. Found out why. Delhi has 0% defenses. :blush: Move some of the pieces around and take out a couple of Russians near Delhi.

IBT: Russian reinforcements on the way...

1330AD Yep. This is the turn; before the reinforcements arrive. Decide to go in with the catapults, who take some damage - three out of five join the happy bombarding grounds in the sky. But they've done more than sufficient damage. Six straight victories bring Delhi in our grasp. Find out a good use for the Great Prophet - Delhi is Hindu and Jewish holy city yet has neither buildings.

IBT: Our boys still do well defending against catapults and their longbowmen.

1340AD Russian maceman looks at our crossbowman the wrong way - 6.0 vs. 8.8? No problem! Nice work. Decide to go for Paper and reduce to 70% so that we're not running negative - due in 5 turns.

1350AD Find Yekaterinburg down in the South. These really are the Deadlands - ruins everywhere! Decide to build Solomon's Temple in Delhi.

1360AD Move more troops down Yekaterinburg way.

1370AD Yekaterinburg bites the dust. I had already rung up Peter, but he wasn't interested in giving it away.

1380AD Move troops down South way to have a look over the border.

OK. Overall, we're not looking too bad. I recommend we get peace with Pete, as we'd be able to make some citizens happy. Paper is due soon and there's a settler coming on in Karakorum. I recommend grabbing the spot near Montezuma in the Deadlands.

Rather worryingly, with the largest Empire on earth and the most populous and fertile citizens, we're 4th in the military stakes. Time for infrastructure followed by monstrous army building. If we go for Monty next, we'd be able to isolate him quite nicely...

Sorry about the rather uninspiring write up. Have Christmas shopping to do and getting told off about it...

Don't worry, we've got the power!
Greggo, Bal, could write when you are out for Christmas?

I'll be here for Christmas if my turns come up, just don't expect me to play on the 25th!

Surely there's a Christmas smiley!

Nicely done!

Troop numbers can be hard to keep up when you're actually using them rather than just letting them sit around. They're obviously effective :D

Got it. I'm not gonna be out for xmas, but have an exam tomorrow. I can play tmro afternoon, but if DA wants to grab it and go, I don't mind switching.

--Greggo

I plan to freeze the game for the Christmas time, let's say 20.12 - 7.01 (see the absence list). What do you think about it?

Haha, I have an exam tomorrow too. You play tomorrow afternoon.

And the hiatus is probably a good idea.

Hey all,

Sorry for the long break, but I don't think I'll be able to pick it up this round. The computer's acting up, and with exams and all (2 more to go) I don't really have time to deal with it. Hopefully I'll be able to join back in on the next go round.

Good luck,
Greggo

Yep, my last exam is today, so I'll play at around 4 PM PST.

1390 AD
Antium: Aquaduct -> Heroic Epic
Neapolis: Maceman -> Colosseum
Calcutta: Maceman -> Barracks

1400 AD
Learn Paper. Shop it to FDR for his map, Music, and 50 gold.
Shopt paper to Louis IV for his map, Theology, and 20 gold.
Start work on Guilds to beeline for gunpowder.

I start getting together a stack to send towards St. Petersburg – Russia only has 4 cities left:

Karakorum: Settler -> Longbow. I send this settler to the hill where India used to be to block off the Aztecs, as well as claim two gems and a spices.

*Inter-turn*
We’re the 2nd wealthiest civ:

1410 AD
Calcutta: Barracks -> Pikeman
Turfan: Colosseum -> Longbow

1420 AD
Turfan: Longbow -> Maceman

Our axe pillages a Russian mine:

1430 AD
Karakorum: Longbow -> Maceman
Antium: Heroic Epic -> Maceman

Antium really cranks the units out now!

Ning-hsia is built on the hill near the aztecs.

Our stack reaches the gates of St. Petersburg. Here is the situation with the siege:

*Interturn* Roosevelt declares! A 2-front war is upon us! I have the worst luck with sneak attacks... luckily the Heroic Epic was built in Antium the turn before, so we should be able to raise an army for the Eastern front pretty quickly.

1440 AD
Cumae: Colloseum -> Forge
Neapolis: Colloseum -> Forge
Calcutta: Pikeman -> Maceman

1450 AD
Rome: Market -> Catapult
Antium: Maceman -> Pikeman

We learn guilds, I start on gunpowder.

We can finally talk to Hatty again, and I trade her engineering for Drama, Compass, her map, and 20 gold. We can see pretty much the whole “old world” now. See the end of this post for a screen shot.

1460 AD
Karakorum: Maceman -> Maceman
Clampigfish: Jewish Temple -> Theater
Bangalore: Granary -> Lighthouse

1470 AD
Rome: Catapult -> Catapult
Antium: Pikeman -> Longbowman

Roosevelt has knights!

1480 AD
Turfan: Maceman -> Pikeman
Antium: Longbowman -> Pikeman

With Rome’s catapult up in antium, I decide to put an end to the besieging American stack.

Here’s the stack before the cat attack:

And here’s the stack after our cat attacks (and withdraws!)

It’s now easy mop-up for our maces and pikes.

I’ll take 2 more turns to end on a round number.

1490 AD
Karakorum: Maceman -> Maceman
Beshbalik: Colosseum -> Longbow
Rome: Catapult -> Catapult

1500 AD
Clampigfish: Theatre -> Lighthouse
Antium: Pikeman -> Catapult
Calcutta: Maceman -> Granary
Delhi: Library -> Granary

I trade Peter Paper and 20 gold for Optics.

We should have an offensive ready for Boston momentarily, we have quite a few maces and cats in Antium. Horses should come on line from St. Petersburg in a few turns as well, so we can start sending knights into the fray during the next 10 turns.

Here’s the maps “old world” that I traded for:

And Here’s the save.

Nicely done. :thumbsup:

You said in 1500 there that you traded Peter Paper + $20 for Optics . . .How? Aren't we at war with Petey? Or did you do a 10turn peace deal with him that you forgot to mention? :hmm:

Looks good though. America's a big target. Russia, Spain, and Egypt have very few cities for us to worry about but are likely to be heavily defended.

:hammer:

Ah, I forgot to mention - I got peace, a map, 40g, and 3 gold per turn right after I captured St. Petersburg so I could focus on the eastern front. 2-front wars are bad.

We still have a large number of units in the Ning-hsia-Delhi-St. Petersburg area, which is a good thing because we have 2 enemies over there. We have 2 natural chokepoints on the hill west of delhi and Ning-hsia itself, and once we have 3 or 4 longbows at each, we should be fine against any attacks.

I can't wait to get horses and start pumping out the knights with Antium!

I would secure the american front first, then finish Pete.
Probably I'll be able to play tomorrow first, so we can discuss some furher strategies.

Hi guys, something I didn't mention in my rather terse write-up was that many troops built during my turns ended up on the Western Front, just in case - have a look at the Western cities - they're quite well defended... I think...
