I think the Un victory way is a little unrealistic. You are elected to be the president of the UN, and for that you win the game? Why? Did you became the dictator of the whole world by doing that?
But that's completely diferent. That is a matter of creating a newly form of civilating a entire new world. Wouldn't that be a motive to be the most important thing that ever be done in a entire game of civ?
The UN should be like an expanded planetary council in SMAC. Member nations can vote to impose sanctions or declare war. There should also be a diplomatic victory where in the UN you are voted to be the world government, but you should have to have an incredible reputation to achieve this. Now that I think about it, this could be a way to incorporate the benefits for doing good deeds people have been talking about.

Yeah, these aren't bad ideas, i know there has been tons of talk on the subject before. I really don't like how the U.N. can just automatically lose you the game if someone gets the wonder before you. I mean, the U.N. is next to useless in real life, why should it be so great in civ?

Even if you are elected World Governor, its unlikely it was a unanimous vote. The nay-sayers would still have to be 'convinced' to join the new world order. This may involve economicallly crippling them, or even enforcing a regime change upon them.
I think most people are unhappy with diplomatic victory (it needs to be changed or removed), and most people are unhappy with the UN (it should be changed and have more interesting effects).
