Uncovering Fog Of War?

Hi, I have a question regarding naval and land units uncovering new areas (mainly naval).


Is there a reason why alot of the time I am unable to uncover areas that I would like to, they seem to be blocked off and I get the red no go icon on the cursur.Is this down to the unit im using or because im not far enough on in the game.

My map at the moment has large areas that my scouts could only go around which is frustrating to say the least.

You need to research Astronomy (Caravel ships) to be able to travel into the ocean . The early ship, trireme, is only capable of traveling along the coast . (2 tiles away from the shore, if i remember right )
