unending please wait

Since installing Gods & Kings, my Civ 5 will occasionally hang in "please wait", not processing other turns in single player. This has gone on for four hours straight. I have tried 5 other saved games to no avail. Any ideas?

Have you tried verifying the game files through steam? Does this problem only occur with saved games or new games also?

haven't verified the files with steam. The issue occurs only in some games and after some game time has expired, so from a saved game.
