Attached is the airbase from C:CTP.

It is possible to have airbases in Civ3, though the method is unintuitive and I'm not sure if the AI is going to know what to do with it. Use at your own risk. I'll outline two ways to make an airbase.

First, you'll need to put the unit graphics in a folder titled "Airbase" in the art/units directory, after that modify the .BIC in one of the following ways:

Create a new unit, Land class. Give it the following attributes:
  • Select a unit icon. This is the icon that appears in the build list, so select something appropriate like the fighter graphic or perhaps the paratrooper graphic (this does not effect how the unit will appear once you've built it).
  • Give it a requisite tech, probably flight or advanced flight.
  • Shield cost, population cost, and moves are up to you, use your own discretion.
  • Transport capacity > 0; Operational range > 0; Bombard str, bombard range, rate of fire all > 0; No HP bonus.
  • Do not check any AI strategies (you can try artillery if you like, but it will probably screw up the AI even more).
  • Select all standard orders except "Go To."
  • Select the special actions "Unload," "Airlift," "Bombard," and "Airdrop."
  • Required resources are again at your discretion.
  • Unit abilities: "Transports only aircraft" and "Immobile" are the important ones, this is a bombard unit so you might want to give it blitz if you gave it > 1 moves. Also radar seems to fit well, since it's an airbase. No other unit abilities really make any sense.
  • Don't forget to make it available to civs!

This is the most straightforward way - I've tested it and it doesn't crash the game or anything. Second method:

Create a new unit.
  • Follow the instructions for the land class airbase.
  • Then, change the class to "Sea."
  • Check the "Naval Carrier" tag in AI strategies.

In both cases, you will have a unit capable of bombard (if you don't like that just give it a range of zero). It will have no hit points, and if you move a unit onto an enemy airbase you will capture it. To use it, just build it in a city with an airport and paradrop it wherever you like. Also, you can build it in one city, airlift it to another, and then paradrop from that city, just like a paratrooper.

The second method is the one I believe the AI will be able to use. I've tested both a little, but only to make sure the human player can use them properly. I haven't seen the AI use them at all, though I let them capture mine. My guess is that if the Naval Carrier tag is checked, the AI will know to place air units there. But hey, maybe we'll be lucky and the AI will be able to use them either way. The big shortfall to creating this unit using the second method is that, it being a sea unit, you can only build it in coastal cities.

Another annoying aspect of both of these setups is that, if you place a land unit in that square (which you'll probably want to), the land unit will hide the airbase. But of course the unit still functions as it should.

Until the expansion comes out this is the best solution I can come up with. Please post your experiences with this unit here - I'd like to know how it works.

I already made this. It's in the Completed Modpacks forum. I gave it airlift, airdrop, immobile, adm 001, cost 6, radar, range 8, carry air, requires Flight, and carry 6.

This sounds like an awesome unit, but if the AI doesn't use it then it's a little pointless. I just would hate to have an advantage because the computer is stupid!
