Unit auto-upgrade

Do units not auto-upgrade 1-for-1? I can't remember the exact number of horsemen units that I had, but it was at least 130. Now that we've discovered Combustion, I've only got 51 tanks. What happened?

They upgrade in accordance with their production cost. Horsemen cost 50. Tanks cost 200. Therefore you get one tank for every four horsemen. You probably also had some cavalry and knights, or more horsemen than you remember?

Yes, I had 25 cavalry as well. Thanks for the reply, that makes complete sense now.
