unit preview: modern infantry + need help with sounds (lots of pictures!!!)

that is sooooooooooooooooooooo nice man :D best unit ever!

This is a very well done unit. I would call it either 'Modern Infantry" or "Light Infantry", both of which could work. However, I would recommend light infantry (reasons later). It represents a step forward for the Infantry unit, this time the soldier has acces to automatic weapons, flak jackets, and anti-tank grenades. I would give it stats of 10/14/01, and make it replace Infantry, and be draftable. I would make the Mech Infantry have a better attack, 14 or 16, and make it not draftable. This is to signify that you can't just draft vehicles and soldiers, but can draft soldiers.

Would it be possible for you to make a new unit, this one called "Land Warrior" or "Modern Infantry." It would use that new soldier of the future equipment, with the OICW or M4 with attached thermal sight. It would be the pre-eminent defensive unit, and you would get it from Integrated Defense.

This unit is amazing! Please don't tell me you're doing it frame by frame! If you are, you are the ballsiest person I know!

Well, to help speed the release of this unit (now that I've seen it, I can't play a game of civ without it, which sucks because I want to play civ... :) ), I've written up a civilopedia text for it. Hope it's good enough.

^[Modern Infantry] are well trained, high-tech warriors of today's battlefields.

^A city must have $LINK<rubber=GOOD_Rubber> in its $LINK<Strategic Resource=GCON_ResourcesS> box to build modern infantry.

^Improvements in standards of training and professionalism, combined with the use of automatic weapons, kevlar armor, night-vision goggles and sophisticated logistical support, mark the evolution the foot soldier. Even with the increasing role of Special Forces over more conventional armies, they continue to be a significant and versatile component of combat operations.

So, all the animations are done for it, and all you need is sounds, right?

Thanks for the input!

I started this unit more than a month ago so if you say it looks good then this is because I invested a lot of time into it (I just want to say that because I´m no master of modelling or something like that). This does not mean I don´t like to hear your praise ;)

Light Infantry would be alright too. But the original marine already seems to have some kind of body armor and a machinegun so the stats should not be too powerful.
Are today´s soldiers really better in the defense than in the offense?
I have plans to create some 'special commandos' with up-to-date equipment(I also had the OICW in mind), the unit here has just standard equipment.

I have to add that I did not play civ3 much in the modern times, my games usually end shortly after I enter the last era (and when did I play the last time civ3.....?)

As level already said, I use 3dmax for modelling and a special plugin for the animation. This helps a lot but sometimes it makes me just crazy because it does things I don´t want it to do.
I still have to do all the animation frame by frame, no motion capturing here ;) and of course I still have to cut&paste.

Thanks dannyevilcat for the description although it´s a bit too short (background is very good) but I don´t complain.
Yep, all animations are done (may still edit some of them, like the drinking animation) and you just delivered the decription for the unit so there are only the sounds left and I still have to cut&paste about 920 frames but this is really no problem ;)

I forgot to add that the soldier fires twice in the attack animation and then looks up to see if he hit the target.

Just a small update:
I did the civilopedia pictures and the picture for the unit_32 file.
And by doing that I accidentally overwrote my 04Marinelarge.pcx file. Could anybody be so nice to post that file so I can change it back (I don´t want to reinstall everything)?
Thank you!

Here's the large marines civilopedia icon you wanted.

EDIT: Removed attachment to help preserve server space. Aren't I swell?

This unit rules!

balou is :king:

but what if you used this infantry animation, shrunk down...nxt to the mech inf apc...so when the mech inf is attacked/attacks...the soldiers rush out and fire?

otherwise theres no infantry in mechanised infantry

Some more ideas/comments:

1) Maybe you could have a sound of some one gulping down a beer or something for the victory sound, if using the alternate victory animation

2) I don't think stats of 8/14/1 would make the Marine or Paratropper useless. Marines would still have the ability to do amphibious assaults and Paratroopers would still be able to paradrop. The normal infantry in the game have stats of 6/10/1, so I think that stats of 8/14/1 would be a reasonable incremental increase to reflect modern weapons, equipment and tactics. Mech Inf would still be the best for defense, but this unit would do in a pinch if you were short of oil or rubber.

3) If used as a Light Infantry type unit, maybe it should be given the All Terrain as Roads ability to reflect the ability of Light Infantry units to travel light and move fast. A modern Light Infantry division has something like 10,000 soldiers (or maybe a little less than that), but virtually all of them are combatants (including the cooks, clerks, drivers, virtually everyone fights). A standard Mech Inf division is about 15-20,000 soldiers, but probably only about half of them fight--the rest are support personnel who only fight in a pinch.

Again, great looking unit. Can't wait to use it.

Another thought:

I noticed the assault rifle has a grenade launcher under the barrel. Any chance of any alternate or second attack animation with him shooting the grenade launcher? I know you already put a lot of time into this unit, so I was just curious if that was in the cards.

Thanks Dannyevilcat for the file!

Schizo_Angel: I´ll first try to finish this unit and then think about other things ;)

Ed O'War:
1) I did not think much about the sounds yet but what you said sounds reasonable.(I´m still hoping someone will help me out)

2) Ok, then the unit will have 8/14/1 and I name it Light Infantry. I still think the marine and paratrooper are pretty much useless but it´s the same in the original game (in my view) so I´m fine with the above stats.

3)I don´t think he should have the 'treat all squares as roads' ability simply because there is no reason that Light Infantry should travel any faster than the normal Infantry. In fact he also has to carry around some heavy equipment.
I think we should reserve this ability for guerilla units.

Grenade Launcher:
I thought about this too. Generally it is possible, the animation would not be much different from the current one. Right now I think about him reloading a grenade then firing the grenade and then make it somehow loop smoothly.
The problem with this is that you can only have one animation in the game and I think it would not make sense if the unit uses the grenade launcher as primary weapon when he has an assault rifle.

Here are a few other sounds you might want to work with. I'd love to help more, but I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly :)

hmmm this would be an awsome unit for a future mod Im planning......It would also be nice to switch the modern infantry tank as an upgrade to calvary and make this unit an upgrade to infantry

Here is a revamp of the two attack sounds I posted yesterday. Both have been pared down to two shots apiece. AttackA is two shots from an STG-44 German assault rifle. AttackB is made up of two shots from an American M-1 Garand rifle. Lastly, the Victory.wav is a slurping sound paired with Dannyevilcat's excellent burp for a finishing move.

Polaris, would you be able to condense the two shots closer together to more closely match the animation?

The alternate victory sound is good!
