Has anything been shown or said about unit stacking? I've tried searching the forum but with no luck. I know that we will be able to mix unit types, but is this in an army "type" of thing or what? Also has there been any screen shots of a stacked or mixed unit?

I think I have read that armies will still exist, but they will be more difficult to create or obtain. Stacks is a different thing, They will be allowed but the mechanics will be very different. Take a cup of coffee :coffee: a piece of paper, a ruler a set of pens of different colors and go to this thread:

read it and make a nice scheme, you will need it to understand the new combat rules ;)

If the scheme is good and you understand it all, please, share it with us. :)

Good Lord! I just wanted to know if units that are in the same square worked the same way as CIV III. (if you could even have a SOD) I don't want to have to break out the graphing calculator.

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing. Maybe there will be a limit to the SOD, making it more like a Stack of Peril.

Nothing I've read suggested that there will be a limit to the number of units in a stack (though there may be), but there are definitely changes to the mechanics of the game that may make stacks of death a less welcome option. For example, artillery can now damage all the units in a stack.

You better be able to move things in stacks... I quiet playing Civ 3 vanilla because of this. Took me hours to move all my units in the later ages. Its amazing it took them two expansion packs to fix this. If I have to go through that frustration again will not need to worry about civ addiction.

From Gamespot arcticle
GS: The E3 presentation raised as many questions as it answered. For instance, the new unit and combat system seems to eliminate the ability to stack units on top of each other. Or will you still be able to do that?

BC: You can still stack units and move them as a group, but I believe the new system promotes a combined arms approach rather than indiscriminate stacking. There are many shortcuts available for selecting any or all units on a given square, and the game determines the best attacker when you give a stack attack order, or the best defender when your stack is attacked.

According to recent interviews you will be able to command that a stack of yours attacks an enemy stack; the computer will pick the best units to attack with and continue attacking until one SOD has been defeated. So you won't have to activate unit after unit as in Civ3.

I'm using a little interpretation, but this seems to be the case.

That is how I have interpreted that section too, Carver-that a Stack Attack/Defense will continue until one side or the other yields the field of battle (by death or retreat), without constant player input on a unit-by-unit basis.
Also, all of the information out on Single Combat Strength and Unit Strengths & Weaknesses all point VERY heavily towards an SOD mentality being a poor strategy for victory (i.e. it will be quality of unit combination-and terrain choices-not sheer numbers which determine the outcome of battles!)

From what i read from the interview in Gamespot, stacking a mixed of units is better than a stack(SOD) of one unit.

For example, a stack of knights and muskets will able u to engage another stack and also defend from another stack, while a stack of only knights will be whiped off easily if attacked by another stack of knights first.

Something like Civ2 where if a stack of unit, the best defender will defend, just that now it is applicable in offence as well, and it can move in stack and also all dont just die after the first battle was lost like Civ2

Did i understand it wrongly? Just what i think
