unit upgrades

Just wondering what you do when you have multiple obselete units lying around? I get a little frustrated at the price of upgrading those units and rather than disband or lower science to be able to afford an upgrade i sometimes gift them to civs. Ill do this if its a friendly civ at war with a civ posing a threat - and sometimes gift to less than pleased civs who are fighting a loosing battle against a powerful civ that needs to be stopped.

I've never tried gifting units to the AI. Do you get a + modifier with them for doing so and if so what does it say? I always figured the gifting units option was mainly for use in multiplayer...
