Disclaimer: This game has nothing to do with the Unreal Tournament games.

This game is an RPG set in an Alternate History Late Iron Age Finland. (The map is randomly generated though) The game has no set goals, you can do whatever you want and be whatever you want. Your only real goal is to survive.

What is URW?

UnReal World, UrW, is a unique graphical roguelikish RPG taking place in the far North ages ago. It brings you realistic game world with lots of historical traits as well as northern folklore, beliefs and way of life. Features and atmosphere of the game are very original and fascinating.

As a member of one of the nine varying cultures you'll enter a very realistic, enchanting and charming game system & world:

# lots of full-of-feeling graphics, pictures and original sounds and musics
# play freely or follow various game courses in a huge randomly generated world.
# skill-based system including tens of skills from Cookery to Hideworking.
# intelligent creatures and fellow-men.
# find excitement from the everyday life and surviving in the harsh wilderness.
# keep up relationships with spiritual world and supernatural guardians of the nature.

...there are infinite ways to play as a fisherman, a hermit seeking for the peace, a brave adventurer, a rough hunter, a trapper or a tradesman etc. Everything is up to you.

No, it isn't. It's played in single player. It's a lot like Nethack.

A new Windows beta version of the game has been released. It should now work properly under XP, though it's only at beta stage it's completely playable.

The windows version should still work under most, really really, old computers.

As i never heard about it , but after reading a bit about the Unreal World it seems interesting, but is this game a freeware like Nethack/Slash'EM/Zangband or a commercial product ?

I notice the new version is under the Download section in the Unreal World website, but i see in the News section a price of 10$ .

So that is confusing me a bit to be honest.

In unregistered version your lifetime is limited to 10 days IIRC.
I have the registered version. It's running in dosbox with no problems.

I love it. At first I had real trouble getting food, but when i took the tutorial like thing i found out all i needed to know.

BTW, how far are you in the game with screenshot #1?

The game works a lot like most fantasy/rogue like games (Like Nethak) keyboard usage, no mouse. The game commands might not make sense at first (Make sure you don't have Caps Lock enabled, if it is turn it off), but if you have played Nethack before then it will be no problem.

The game itself is really easy to learn, but difficult to survive in. You have no goals, except for your survival. And there are plenty of ways to do that too, i remember reading one person (at the URW forums) going completely vegetarian. Winter is, obviously, a challenge at first to survive in. You have to settle down somewhere for the winter, maybe build a cottage.

Too much Finnish for my taste.

Well, it's set in (Sort of) Iron Age Finland, personally i find ancient Finnish (And Nordic in general) mythology and culture fascinating. But then again all ancient cultures are intresting in their own ways to me.

Nope, you char is dead. You'll have to register if you want your charecters to live past the 10 day limit. I've got my registeration a few years back and it's worth the trouble, when new versions are released you don't have to buy the registeration again, one registeration code works for all versions of URW.
