I first played the game with 1.52 patch, and after about 2 hours of play, it crashed to desktop. After immediately reopening the game and going back, it crashed again. After that, it rebooted my computer. I tried again for the next few days. First time I play, I get a few hours of use, then it goes to hell until I reset.

So i uninstalled and deleted all old files. Reinstalled and patched to 1.09, then tried the Harkonnen patch. After playing with that, I got about an hour into the game before it CTDd again. Same symptoms.

Current system is:
AMD 2k processer
512 MB RAM
Radeon 9800 PRO
400W power source, one HD
XP SP2

Any advice would be more than welcome. Tried Harkonnens with 64-80 virtual mem, insane turned on and haven't had any luck.

This is exactly what happens to me though I have never got past the loading stage from the .exe. Have a very similar pc build to yours aswell only thing different is the Pent 4 1.8 processer and 768 RAM.

Have also tried everything you have done aswell, to no avail :(

Am praying for a solution to come soon or Civ4 will be going back to the shops.

Just an update:

I tried the mid release harkonnen patch (where you enter the vid cards memory into the .ini) and it still crashes after extensive play and recrashes after a few turns after that.

Windows is telling me there is an error in the program when it happens...

I have the same problem. :(

AMD 64 3000+
Windows 2000 + SP4
1024Mo RAM
GeForce FX 5700 w/ 128MB RAM
ForceWare Release 80 Version: 81.98

I just got the game, so I have only played with 1.52.

PS: It's look like the number of units have an effect. I have the feeling the game crash more often with an old civivilisation.

Same thing happened to me, after a while the graphics start to get weird, and then it just goes black or reboots.
My computer:
Pentium 4 CPU 2,4 GHz, 1 GB Ram
Windows XP
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

Now, it's worst than ever: I can't do more than 2 rounds with this game.

Does somebody want to try? We are at year 1996 and I was starting to invade the American's territory.

I have no mods installed.

I'm crashing out when starting a game as well. The error message says that I am out of video memory, and to reduce video memory usage. I also get this:

File: \main\civilization4.bak\SDKs\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9RenderedTextureData.cpp, Line: 167

I've already tried reducing my graphics settings to low, which just got me a little further through the game start sequence... is there a way to avoid Leonard Nimoy's speech?

If patch 1.53 doesn't come out soon, I may be reinstalling the game to 1.09.

What driver/video card combo are you using?

I replied to your pm, but for the rest of you, the video card on my laptop is an ATI Radeon 9000. When I asked Windows to update the driver, it found driver version 8.163.0.0 (the date on it is 8/9/2005).

Considering that the driver I used to have was 3 1/2 years old, I'm surprised I haven't had more problems with this game...

C4 won't run on my computer either. It loads through all the menu screens. On the leader screen, the leaders only have eyeballs and teeth floating around. It goes on to the loading screen, says, "Ready," and crashes.

I have 700+ mb of RAM, Windows XP, and a P4 1.8 GHz processor, but I think I need a new graphics card. Mine is two years old and is no longer made and no new drivers are made for it. I get paid Friday so I can buy a new card then.

I play it on my father's computer, which was bought two months ago, and it still acts up. Blobs of color appear on the screen and follow the mouse around.

New to this forum, but I have the same problems.

AMD Athlon (TM) XP 1800+
1.53 GHz
512 Ram

Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT card (New - just installed)
128 MB DDR3 AGP8x

Have the 1.52 patch.

I can get the game started but after a couple of turns it crashes.
Sent Microsoft 3 error reports all saying unknown causes.

Civ 4 log report says [1391.781] ERR: InitWinApp() failed, exiting

Bought the new card just for this game, now this

Thanks for the heads up, was toying with the idea of buying that exact card, not just for Civ 4 tho, (currently have 9600XT) to see if it would get things running smoothly.

Dont think I will bother now.

This is ridiculous... I'm on the latest drivers, with a full update on the game, and now after a fresh reboot, I can't get more than 10 turns into a game without crashing...

This card works great with v1.0.0. I unistalled Civ4 with the 1.52 patch and did a reload. Have played for approx 2 hours with no problem or lagging. Only thing is it takes approx 4 min to load a saved game.

Not sure if I should install the 1.09 patch. Still on the fence about it.

Bit like Russian Roulette isnt it :crazyeye: May still get the 6600GT but more for Guild Wars and Oblivion (when it comes out) then for any hope it will solve my Civ4 problems.

I have never had any problems with the game load times on my system (save game 10 secs), its just the random Hard Crashes that stop me playing the game.
