Seems its close to impossible to lunch game with more then 6. If it doesnt crash u end up with frozen timer which never moves. Even in civ4 I regulary hosted with 10-12 people. This is crazy, they never focus on multiplayer anymore.

Hmmmm, i play with the missus at home with a cross over cable. With WIFI, it was terrible. It would just hang and sometimes restart and even slows down the game. Then i tried routing it, plugged both laptops to the router and still not very good. Seemed like the router would overload after about 6hrs of play. Then i tried cross over 1gbps cables and so far so good.

I play huge map, with 12 other civs, it says unsupported number of players but does not seem to be an issue. My game loads after around 20-30secs and never had turn times higher than 30 secs. Maybe 40secs wait when we reach higher eras but never noticed it come close to a min.

pssh this game's multiplayer is just broken. i've yet to finish a single game because of technical issues. i just got out of a great game, 6 players, 75ping average, quick turns, no lag, and it still froze. great!

Ok, reporting back after some extensive playing.

Freezing just occurs every 2hrs or so and needs a restart. We just save it at every milestone for instance after building a wonder or finishing something important.

I have yet to finish a game also in MP. I have restarted 4 times due to freezing or after reloading it would just die on us.

Players need to play under DX9 all the time or it will occasionally occur freezes. I often reloaded games without problems. We need all the same guys, no subs can enter the game unfortunately.

Multiplayer is far form perfect, but it certainly keep a good interest for this game because multiplayer mode is funnier and harder than singleplayer mode.

Playing with trusted friends(and under DX9 very very important!) is almost the only way to finish a game.

Ive Been able to finish 2 out of maybe 25 multiplayer games. 20 of those games because someone quits and everyone else quits too, and two because the game froze or crashed.
Was really bummed today because I.was.trolling a.guy.pretty good building cities near his capital blocking.him in.destroying.his.units , offering.peace and.open borders giving.him.free.luxury resources then taunting him in chat before declaring war again after 10 turns... then the game crashed..... my karma I guess.

Yes people randomly quitting open games is a social phenomenon, not related to the games code, just human nature. Join an organized group like the league and that problem goes away. But like Tabarnak said if you play with the right settings games can be played and can be fun. And MP, playing real players is definitely more fun than playing the dumb AI.

I really think its a matter of processing power. My computer can host a 4 player game very well ... but on 6 it startes to chug and sputter and desynchs become more common.

I think something like the new six core intel procs would probably host a 6 player just fine.

Does anyone have a six core proc to try it out?
