You can also pick raze rather than puppet on the first capture, even if you think you might puppet on the second capture. That lets you sell off an extra building. Really try to capture with a unit that can retreat. Using the city as a buffer this way lets means the AI is losing an extra or units every turn.

This tactic works really well if the city involved is a CS, as the city pops up stronger, can bombard, and makes it easier not to loose your capturing unit. Your enemy AI will be losing an extra 2-3 units every turn.
 
....hhmm so if you DoW'ed your neighbor immediately, he won't have time to build up the big strike force that he will come at you with eventually, but rather come at you with smaller groups of freshly built units?!

They won't come at you at all if they think their army is not big enough. They will just keep their units in base.
 
Don't promote your units when fighting barbarians, take the health because barbarians don't rank up your units.
 
Sorry Reddishrecue, but that is very bad advise. You only get two promotions from barbs, and the health power-ups counts against that.
