Updating Ubuntu 6.10 behind a Proxy

I'm on a University campus, and so use the provided Wireless to get internet, which I have to use via a proxy. To get Firefox to work all I have to do is set the connection settings to automatically detect the proxy settings. Is there a way to set the connection settings for Linux so that the update manager can connect to the internet?

sudo export http_proxy="http://proxy.com:8080"

That didn't work, I just got an error saying "sudo: export: command not found"

Try it without sudo

not sure if they have it in 6.10, but can't you just click system>preferences>network proxy

Thanks GVBN and Shady, I had to edit the proxy options in that and in the Synaptic (even though I wasn't using Synaptic...) but once I got it figured out it finally worked.
