Hello, I'm starting to get used to Civilization III since my civ is now the most advanced civ on the planet (in my game that is), just discovered nationalism (give me a break I can't play that well), and now I can upgrade my musketmen to riflemen. I was wondering is there an option to upgrade all units to the most advance unit to date? Like I said, I want to upgrade all my musketmen to riflemen, but I have a lot that is garrisoned and it is too time consuming to try to un garrison and upgade them one by one, so is there a way for me to upgrade all the musketmen units to riflemen? Thanks

As Txurce posted. But, a couple things:

(1) If you're not already aware, a barrack is required to upgrade units garrisoned in a city.

(2) Why do you want to upgrade all? Rarely is it worth the investment. Look at your particularly needs first. If its an offensive unit, by all means upgrade all. But, if their defensive units, you may want to consider upgrading frontier cities. Your core cities are quite safe, particularly once you've got all your cities connected by railroads.

More correctly:

1) your units have to be garrisoned within a city with a barracks. If they are outside of a city or garrisoned within a city with no barracks they won't be upgraded.

2) I disagree. If you are producing massive amounts of wealth, upgrade as much as you can. Also work hard on getting sun-tzu's art of war and leonardo's workshop so you can save money AND get a barracks in every city. Your core cities are relatively safe, but if you are producing units for your core cities perhaps you should upgrade them and send them to the borders instead of making new units.

Also, as of 1.29b doesn't the AI consider the strength based not only on the number of units you have but their relative attack and defense strengths as well? If that's so then upgrading your units gives your civ greater strength and leverage against the other AIs when negotiating (or less if you are behind in tech).

But of course. ;)

It is based on the number of offensive units in 1.29b2, but I'm unaware if the AI capculates offensive attack rates also (e.g. bowman v. cavalry)

Sorry for the late reply, but I did upgrade all since I do have alot of wealth (finally around like 2500 gold with like 200 per turn as I recall). Thanks for your feedback
