I just revolted to Republic and am 2 turns from connecting iron. I have gobs of useless warriors that I would normally disband, putting those shields towards swordsmen. I have ~1200 gold. Would it be better for me to upgrade them instead? Since I've finally learned the usefulness of catapults in the AA, I'm thinking that upgrading would free up towns to build cats. I want to attack my week neighbor (Mongols with 4 towns) Thoughts?

If they are veteran (4HP) upgrade them!
If they are regular or even less (3hp, or 2hp) then disband them.

I would upgrade the regular and veterans to swordsmen and keep any conscripts to disband in the captured enemy cities to rush production or use as a garrison.

Republic doesn't have MP.
True, but they quell resistance just as well as vets. Note that no mention of MPs was made.

If you can afford to, I'd keep them. If the AI is building lots of archers, reg swords can do a good job and will probably get promoted. Otherwise I'd use them to quell resistance and stop flips once you've starved the population down.

Is there any way to go from warrior directly to MI, assuming I have iron and the required techs? I really don't want to spend 30 gold to goto swordsman, plus another 40 to goto MI. I"ll be getting Fuedalism soon and was wondering if I should hold off on upgrading to swords.

If you have Feudalism, then your warrior would upgrade to MI.

But the cost is the same.

Costs for all upgrades, I believe, is the difference in shield costs multiplied by 20.

correct

sort of correct. It is this if you play vanilla/PtW. It is multiplied by 30 if playing C3C, which is what Delphi456 is playing.

Edit: multiplied by 2 for vanilla/PtW and 3 for conquests! Only a factor of 10 out!

what that means, of course, is it's the same total gold to upgrade from warrior->MDI as it is to upgrade from warrior->sword->MDI.

I probably wouldn't bother with an upgrade of regular warriors, unless I had a big invasion planned and wanted a ton of swords.

Since an upgrade requires a Barracks, all the newly upgraded units are automatically Veterans, regardless of their initial experience level. Note that this also means that if you have any Elites, they will be downgraded to Veterans!. If you have Elites, save them and use them in combat to try to get a Military Leader and then upgrade them.

False. You are correct that elites are dowgraded to vets but all others hold their status.

Oops! Sorry about that. I'm so used to building Barracks in all my cities at the higher levesl since I never am able to get Sun Tzu's, I forgot that they are already veterans when I upgrade. But it really sucks that Elites get demoted!

I must be missing something obvious here but I can't figure it out at the moment...

For instance, if we take the shield differential between a warrior and swords (30-10 = 20) and then multiply the difference by 30 (20*30 = 600), obviously this is a far too big of a number. It certainly doesn't take 600 gp to upgrade a warrior to a sword!

So, I know from experience that for the warrior --> swords upgrade, the cost is 30 gp per upgrade, but this formula is not working out for me... What am I doing wrong?

Ooops!

It by a factor of 2 or 3 depending upon which version you're playing. e.g. 60g for a warrior->sword upgrade in C3C.

I'll now correct my earlier post...

Well, my oops as well...

Based on what Delphi said and my own somewhat hazy memories, I was thinking the warrior --> sword upgrade cost 30g.

Based on a C3C factor of three, I'm therefore assuming the swords--> MDI upgrade costs 30gp (10 shield difference*3) and the total path from warrior --> MDI costs 90gp, not the 70gp that Dephi referenced...

Yeh, I was off in my calculations. I thought the upgrades were 30 and 40 because that's what each costs in shields, respectively. My oops.

Now knowing the true cost, GOD, THAT'S EXPENSIVE!!

You are trading 2 or 3 gold for a shield, which is better than the 4 gold for a shield you get charged for cash rushing.
