Upgrade unit to different class?

Has anyone tried to upgrade units to one of a different class? Was it possible, and if so, what happened with the promotions?

Sorry, I would check myself, but will be unable to do so for some time.

I know the Macana in the Civitas Taino mod is a warrior replacement with the Melee Class TypeTag, but the Recon Promotion Class. It keeps it's Recon promotions when upgrading to Swordsmen. But, it you're talking about switching Class Typetags, like from Melee to Ranged, I don't think I've seen anyone try that. Shouldn't be too hard to test though.
