"Upgrades To"

if you have, let's say, an archer inside your cultural borders, and you can build crossbows (you have machinry and iron), you can upgrade your archer to a crossbow. Just select it, and click on the upgrade button :)

Also, note that, when you upgrade a unit, it's promotions are kept, but it loses all experience points over 10.

Actually, I'm not sure if it's "inside your borders" or "in a place where your trade network exists" or something else. But it has to be connected to your cities in some way, so it doesn't work outside all borders, nor in ennemy's land.

Does this apply to a unit attached to a great general as well where they have the free upgrade?

If a unit doesn't need any special resources in order to upgrade to another type of unit, then it can be done anywhere within your cultural border. However if it needs something like Iron or Copper, for example, then it has to be on a road or in a city that's connected to those resources in order to complete the upgrade. And this applies to units attached to Great Generals as well.

Okay, this brings another question from me: does your civilization actually need to possess the required resources of the upgraded unit, or can you just upgrade your unit if a trading partner has the resource but is not trading it with you?

I'm guessing along the lines of the former, since it does not make since that trading partners, even civilizations with a permanent alliance, would just give away a resource because they allow you to come through their borders.

If you can't build a unit without actually possessing the resource, then it stands to reason that you can't upgrade either.
