Upgrading armies

how could one upgrade the army, I have tried to relocate my army into a city which has barracks and also the resource required, however it tells me that i can't upgrade the army while i can upgrade individual riders into calvaries. Perhaps I could try unload and reload armies but I have no idea how to go about doing that, would any of you have any idea how to go about doing this? Thanks in advance.

It is my understanding (and i maybe wrong) that once units are in an army you cannot upgrade them, change them, or remove them from the army. So, if you have an army with 3 riders and a leader-that is how the army will stay. For my own experience, your units can level up-I had a vet knight go to elite while in an army-but you cannot change them out.

I guess this allows a little balance to the game and makes you think before you go creating armies since they appear to be so permanent. If this info is incorrect in any way, I apologize-but this is what I remember from other posts and from what I have seen playing the game.
