Hello all I'm a longtime Civ2 player who will proboly get Civ3 soon I'm wondering what are the outposte used for. Why not just make forts? or cities. Thanks in advance

you can see further with it. u can find the use of it in the civpedia. but i never build it myself.

Outposts uncovers the "fog" around it, slightly more than any unit would, I think. But to build it, you need to "convert" a worker into it. A complete waste of a worker IMO, especially in the early game when workers are much more valuable and you have fewer of them. I've never built one.

Basically, outposts are one of those extra features in Civ3 that are rarely used....
Outposts are really useless to tell you the truth and nothing can change my opinion about them..
Oh and IMHO forts are also pretty much useless :)

I've used the outpost before, of course it was because I accidently pressed the button for the worker to build one!

Outposts have practicaly no use,it is a waste consuming the worker.
Never build them.

if u r playing a scenario map with tons of barbarian uprising, outposts may be of some use.

I originally thought that the use of outposts would prevent barbs from appearing in the area that they can see. After building about twenty of them and leaving them unprotected in a former rival's lands, I quickly found that was not the case. A single barb used rails to destroy about 12 of them at once.

Bah! Live and learn. :)

Wow,
I wouldn't expect barbarians to be able to use rails :)
Some smart barbarian you had in your game

They can use roads and rails as long as they are not actually within your cultural borders.

an obsolete unit on a mountain works just as good as an outpost

Dont outposts have the unit ability radar, so mountains do not obstruct their view?? Also, I think an oupost on a mountain can see up to 4 squares away.

Smart? All they had to do was buy a ticket ;)

Do you really think they buy a ticket? ;) :mischief:
I never saw a barb buying a ticket, allways caught them with no ticket. Needless to say that i am driving a zero tolerance policy to barbs trying to use my RR without paying the fee.... :nono:

I think :ar15: barb just for not having a ticket on your RR is a little bit of a harsh panishment.... may be all you need a little spanking :spank:

i think they are bugged as well (iirc) they dont work as well as they should do and so are nearly pointless

yes, 2 spaces of fog are uncovered on flat land, 3 on hills, 4 on montans. i do use them on my borders to give me adacvaced warnings of barbs or other civs units comeing to my borders.
