Steam loads and then the civ 5 window asking me if i want to run in dx9 or dx11. Select dx11 and then the window disappears and then nothing.

Game worked fine yesterday. Any ideas?

I think there was a steam update recently, might have broken it :(
Is DX9 mode working? If nothing is working, you might try to reinstall Civ.

Hi, I think I have exactly the same problem as you. I played Civ V with DX11 perfectly at yesterday. But guess what! Then I was trying to play the game today, the game chrashes after the intro! This problem happends for me on DX11 but not on DX9! I tried different approaches, but nothing works!

Changed the user.ini file to deactivate intro
Tried to reinstall DirectX

My computer is a AMD Phenom II 965 3,4GHz, 4GB RAM, Geforce 470GTX

Anyone got any tips?

I've been having this problem too... DX9 version works, but no DX11.

Updated ATI drivers, didn't help. Reinstalled DirectX, reinstalled Civ5, no dice. Have gone into ini file to ensure that AA was turned off. I've questioned Steam Support, no response yet.

I'm running 64-bit Win7 on an i7-930, using a single HD5870. It's a little overclocked ;), but I've turned it down and tested at stock with the same results.

Only change I made before this crash was installing the SDK, and I reckon this may have something to do with it, as it changes the config.ini somehow- can anyone who hasn't installed the SDK please post their config.ini so I can compare them?

Just to be sure we're on the same page, here's the error message Windows 7 throws at me:

I can post dxdiag if it helps, but it's looong.

OK, give this a try. I set my antivirus (AVG) to ignore GameRendererOverlay.dll and GameRendererOverlay64.dll. Those two files should be in your Steam folder.

Working for me so far, will update if it breaks again.

I was having the same issue of Dx11 version crashing during intro, but Dx9 version running fine.

I tried all the solutions I could find...drivers, reinstalling game, reinstalled Steam (because game would not reinstall), firewall check, AV check, etc.
Finally I looked closer at the Win7 appcrash details and found that it was an Xfire related dll that was faulting. Then I remembered that Xfire had just added Civ 5 support and 2 and 2 got added together.

First I tried exiting Xfire and sure enough the game would launch fine. Then I remembered about that little popup Xfire throws up when a game launches to let you know how to swith to Xfire In Game. So I disable the Xfire In Game for Civ 5. Now I can have Xfire running AND run the Dx11 version with no trouble.

Ok, I've got the same kind of error as above, id est, a GameOverlayRenderer.dll crash:

Code:
Nom de l’application défaillante CivilizationV.exe, version : 1.0.0.62, horodatage : 0x4cc5a14e

I've tried many things so far, going from reinstalling the DirectX executables in the Civ V's Steam folder from excluding the dll from the AV checking. It's still not working and it become pretty annoying to have to tried between 10 to 15 times to start the game.

Does anyone have a suggestion out there?

Just do what I did. Shelf the game and play Rise of Nations T&P instead. A fun and stable game. No worries about it crashing or any such nonsense. I will take a look back at Civ 5 in a year or so, maybe then they will have fixed this bull$#!*.

That's all well and good save I don't want to buy another game, which even seems to be quite old and difficult to found, let alone that I like Civ V's gameplay. Some people might wonder why Blizzard sells boatloads after boatloads of their games, maybe the fact they don't have major glitches when released is a good part of it.

Well...well I have not come to this forum in over two years. I am so tired of Steam Based games having this unrecoverable crashes in their games. If you guys think this is bad try playing any of the Steam based Total War Games. It took them a year to stabilize Empire Total War...hopefully it will only take 3-6 months for them to do it for Civ V.

To be fair to Steam, that's the two only games that posed that much trouble. All the other ones (Steam says 65, but there's a boatload of HL mods, so it's closer to 40) work just fine or have bugs totally unrelated to Steam.
And let's be more fair: I don't think Steam is at fault here. In Empire as in Civ V, the developers made a brand new game engine without actually taking the required time to stabilize it. I now just hope that Firaxis won't go away to develop a new Civ standalone or whatever in a year or so and leave us in the dust of instability...
