Using barbarians to gain experience?

Hey all,

I've checked "Raging barbarians" on my most recent game and am purposely leaving some fogged area to spawn barbarians thinking that I can have my units cut their teeth and gain experience. Is the assumption that babarians come out of fogged areas correct? Anybody else use this strategy?

Using Barbarians to gain experience is commonly understood, although please note that your units can only get up to 10XPs from fighting Barbarians.

Furthermore please also note that the current patched Warlords version's Barbarians don't suicide against your units like they did/do in Vanilla where you could fortify your Archers on Forested/Jungle Hills and clock up the XPs to qualify for the Heroic Epic.

I'm playing Vanilla CIV... and what are the requirements for the Heroic Epic?

Against animals the max of xp's is 5 but that's enough to make warriors woodsman II. This is useful because barbarian warriors and archers often take on woodsman II warriors and the woodsman units often win this fight in the woods. I have gotten warriors to 10 XP though not too often. More important is the time you gain while connecting copper/horses.

So i only use this baiting strategy deliberately with animals.

For the Heroic Epic, you need to.satisfy the follow three requirements:

1. Have dicovered Literature.
2. Built a barracks in the city you wish to build the Heroic Epic.
3. Have a Level 4 unit.

To get the level 4 you , you need to have gained 10 exp points and promoted the unit.

Edit: You unit only needs to live long enough to get to level 4. If you promoted him to level 4 and he dies on that same turn (after the promotions) then you still get credit for having a level 4 unit.

Also note that other Civs will try and colonize any empty ground on the map they see. So if you leave a foggy patch in the back of your civ for experience, someone WILL camp it, regardless of how cruddy it is.

In theory you could build your cities around a barbarian city then build the great wall.

The barbs couldn't get out and whenever you felt like it, you could just get some free xp. Of course it's nearly impossible to do....

So you can't get MORE than 10xp no matter how many barbarians that you fight?

Correct. Once the unit has 10xp, further battles against barbarians will never provide any more.

I think (in warlords) that battles against barbarians whould contribute towards the amount of XP needed for a great general.

Fighting babarians is fun, but i would be careful, since they have a nasty habit (on raging barbarians) to spawn axeman early, which can be a rel problem if they spawn multiple times.

And, I think barbarian animals will only get you up to the second level. Sometimes it makes sense to try to bait the animals into attacking your fortified warriors or scouts, to get them the woodman promotions. But, once you get woodman two (allowing you double movement over trees and jungles - I always think it's hilarious to watch the warriors moving two this way), there's no sense fighting the animals anymore unless you need to protect settlers/workers.
