Vanishing Pieces

I started the game and starting hitting, "enter" just to see what would happen and how long the game would last. But after about 300 BC my settler just vanished. Other players are clearly walking through all nine of the visible squares I have, and I can't seem to select any unit but the game hasn't ended.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I seem to be a ghost, there but not _there_.

I'm not sure if I understood the situation. Your initial settler disappeared around 300BC without you taking any action. Is that it?
Are you sure the settler unit was not attacked?
