Various Minor Issues

Hey all,

I just wanted to mention a few minor issues I've encountered recently to see if anyone else has seen something similar.

1] Very infrequently I will see trails or strange lines appear on the opposing AI's pictures during diplomacy. One time I saw it happen was with Tokugawa when part of the robe on his arm continued down past where his elbow was. The only other time I saw this was with Hayauna(sp?) where three small lines stretched out from various parts of his lips. Yeah I know really bizarre. They all stretched out in various directions and even moved when Hay. moved his head.

2] I have turned off my zoom to combat option. Rarely one unit will disappear completely but the other one will continue their fight animation until there is a winner. Combat resolves okay and the unit appears immediatley following combat. One example of this was when I was using an infantry against a defending archer in a town. My infantry disappeared and the archers, facing the same way, started shooting but their arrows shot directly to their right instead of ahead.

3] Again with combat, sometimes one unit will start walking in one direction until the combat has resolved. They leave footprints and move at a normal walking pace, even if that direction takes them over ocean. Once combat is finished everything shoots back to normal.

4] Whenever I move the camera over a city occasionally I will notice a small building, or patch of road that is flickering. This flickering will last for a few seconds then clear up although it will continue to happen if I move away then return. This also happens if I have a large stack of similar units. For example a stack of 10 transports will flicker slightly in the center of the picture, usually black spot.

5] The majority of time when I bombard a city the animation for the burning and cloud of smoke is choppy. The mouse is unaffected and continues to move across the screen normally during this apparent slowdown. It seems to worsen if I use a stack of cat's/bships/etc.. as opposed to a single unit.

6] During the other civ's turns the camera can occasionally skip a bit as it jumps to various places where there is action. This one I think may be normal as the camera is whipping all over the place rather quickly. I wouldn't expect this all to be smooth but thought I might as well ask in case anyone else noticed it.

Unfortunately my DVD drive seemed to have just died prior to my coming to work as it doesn't even appear as a valid drive under My computer. In response to the above problems I was going to uninstall and reinstall CIV. There was a lot of rattling from my case during the reinstall of disk one and then it failed to read any other disk after its request for disk 2. It seems strange that it would die mid install like that but I cancelled it and tried a few other disks, including my oblivion Cd. It was unable to read that as well. The drive does continue to open and close but after it accepts a disk it does not make any noise, and the rattling has stopped. For this I've put a call into tech support and I hope to have that issue cleared up.

Until then I am without my CIV and not a happy camper, so I figured posting about it can help ease the withdrawl pains. Thanks for any assistance you guys can provide!

As for points 1 to 6, you might see improvement by experimenting with various graphics options. Chances are that you need to update your graphics drivers. Maybe you need to upgrade your hardware. My recommendation, however, is: if it ain't broke don't fix it.

For #6, maybe modifying the "show enemy moves" and "show friendly moves" can help.

As for the broken dvd drive, have it replaced.
