Very military Civ this iteration

If you're a peaceful civ then I think one of the best neighbors you can have is Tomyris. She's a military/aggressive Civ but it is possible to get on her good side. She's less likely to DOW you if you stick to your word (i.e. if you tell her you'll not forward settle her). Just be sure settle away from her and don't break a promise lol. If you trade with her and keep things cosey she'll consider you a friend and kind of be like your 'protector.' Same with Teddy as an ally. Norway and Aztec will DOW most of the time especially if you're military is low.

I don't like it. And I don't think describing the previous versions science/culture type game play, in a turn-based single player game, as "AFK" is appropriate, either. To each their own, I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of the play styles and I'm not sure which is my favorite yet. Ironically I thought religion would be the easiest ( I play on Emp though) but it's kind of tough and I want to master that one first I suppose.

What I meant was that any play style you choose you can't or shouldn't completely abandon other aspects of the game such as military even for a peaceful Civ.

Ironically I've found that the AI Pericles is more aggressive than Gorgo. Pericles and Gandhi have probably declared war on me the most.

On a related note, I keep getting the "Why are you stationing your troops near my borders" demand from the AI, and I'm getting dinged when they said I reneged on my promise to them that I was "Just Passing Through." Any idea what the parameters are for this? I mean their cities are near mine, so all my units are actually inside my territory.

In real history that never would have worked. The way I see it when I choose to play peacefully it's a challenge to see if I can succeed as a utopian civilization as no civilization ever did in Earth's history. There is a reason no one ever really succeeded at it, it's a very fine balance. It would feel worthless to just magically have a science/cultural victory handed to me. If you do want a pure non-military civ builder I'm sure a mod will come out to remove that part of the game.

I expect that a mod will come yes.

My point is that in previous Civs I was able to play that way without doing what I need to do now in Civ6. It may be more realistic, but really, if I wanted a realistic combat sim game I would play HOI (and have spent a lot of time with that, actually) and not Civ -- not what I play Civ for. Anyway, I am still enjoying the game, but I do not enjoy this aspect of the early game -- it feels like a sink to me in that I have to do a pro forma saber rattle and then the AI backs off, and then I can play the game I want. Kind of dumb, imo.

Again this is settler mode I am talking about. The lowest setting. I'd agree that in any higher setting the AI should gank you ASAP. But shouldn't there be one setting where that isn't the case? Settler didn't feel like this in previous iterations -- again, this is settler mode, I am talking about, not "well when I played Civ 5 in emperor that always happened". Settler mode.
