very unhappy?

In the manual under Population Roster it says that citizens can be happy, content, unhappy or very unhappy. What's very unhappy for? It looks like there are graphics for it in the people.gif too.

Yes, blackies. Light blue, dark blue, red and black. You don't see these very often on the lower levels, but when you reach deity, people become unhappy pretty quickly. Usually you have luxuries, improvements or units to make them happier, so you don't see them on the top of the city screen often either.

So where do you find them? Click the button Happy (or something like it) in the city screen. Here you can see what wonders, units, improvements and luxuries do to your citizens. The top row is the orignial state, the state your citizens would be in had the city been empty, no happiness wonders, no luxuries, no improvements and no units. With many cities (in large empires) you usually find at least one black guy in every city.

With two luxuries they become happy, but units and temples first make them red and then content.

The original sense of the very unhappy citizen is something like double unhappy. You should exert twice energy to turn them into content status than to turn normal unhappy into content.

But due to 'black hat bug' the double unhappy citizen is better that unhappy in some situations. For more details see 'happiness quirk' thread (link in Great Library)
