Victory points

This has probably been asked berfore, but I can't find the answer, so here goes. I've noticed on the history playback, "Victory point location secured by "---". What are victory point locations and how do you recognize them? Is it a resource, strategic point or something else?

The tiles that have obelisks/stone pillars on them are victory point locations.

You may call them strategic points because when you occupy/secure them you earn victory points.
