Video Memory Error

Hello,

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered (more than once) on this board, but I'm frustrated and can't find it. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I bought Civilization IV today and installed it on my computer. The opening video was very choppy. At first, I received a message about the computer settings not matching and that the settings for the game were changed. I was able to play the game just fine.

Afterword, I started looking to see if I could fix the video issues. I'd love to see this game play with the rich graphics it provides.

I tried to adjust my video settings with no success. At first, the video remained choppy. Now, the game crashes and I'm unable to play it.

I get this error:
Failed to allocate video memory
File:\source\main\civilization4\SDKs\gamebryo2\corelibs\Nidy9rendered\Nidy9rendered textureddata.cpp, Line170

How do I fix this so the game will run on my system? I do not want to go purchase a video card simply to play this game.

I am running:

Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Pentium 4 2.40 GHz
512 MB RAM

1024x768 screen resolution
Highest 32 bit color

It appears I'm running a Legacy video card. The info says Legacy Video Capture Device. From what I saw online, Legacy is no longer producing updated drivers.

I've tried reading the tech fix posts here and at Apolyton but I'm not making sense of them.

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Shawnster

I am having the same problem with Warlords. I'm running a Dell Inspiron @ 1.6 gigaherz and a gigabyte of RAM. This is slightly under the recommended requirments insofar as speed is concerned, but far above the memory requirements. The problem usually arises at the screen that comes up when I found a religion. (Do I not have enough faith?:crazyeye: ) Sure be nice if someone knows of an answer besides buying a new machine.

I'm having the same problem except it happens on any in-game setting when I reach the industrial age on maps with more than three civs.

I'm running Civ 4 on a 1.6 GHZ Celeron 512MB RAM 16MB NVIDIA Geforce2 GO 100. This is what I had to do to keep it from crashing.

Install the latest patch and change/add this to your config file. Also upgrade your graphics drivers.

(Videos are still choppy, military advisor crashes to desktop, leaderheads stop working mid game, large maps run slow, forests and Jungle sink into terrain, other minor graphical glitches, but still playable!!)

I`ve had the same problem, but its totaly at random. Sometimes i can play for hours, sometimes it happends directly after startup. (or re-starting up).
I`ve tried to mail the developers tech support, but they never answers. There`s customer support for you...the bastards! :/
Any solutions that fixes all problems, and doesnt leave crashes like military advisors etc?
