Vista seems to believe my Civ3 Conquests save files do not exist unless the game is running. I bought a Vista machine a year ago and installed Civ3 on it, and have happily been playing Conquest since, but recently when I went to clear out old saves and move the final saves from finished games into a special folder, they weren't around. Specifically, I accessed the directory:

C/ProgramFiles(86)/Infrogames Interactive/Civilization III/Conquests/Saves, which is where they're always at. But there are no files in that folder, just a subfolder labeled Auto which is similarly empty.

So I figure, they're hiding somewhere else. I check other folders -- Atari, Firaxis, and the like. Nothing. I search for some of my savegame file names; I use names like "War", "Peace", and "1" quite often, so that should be easy....only, Vista returns no results.

I go in-game, and I use the "previous folder" button to figure out where the saves are. According to the game, they're located in C/ProgramFiles(86)/Infrogames Interactive/Civilization III/Conquests/Saves....which is the folder I LOOKED in. I accessed the folder outside the game, right-clicked, even. It reads 0 files, 1 folder.

Why is Vista ignoring the files, and how can I access them?

Whats the extension (I forgot). Try searching the drive for *.EXT (Where the EXT is the extension). Also make sure the hidden files are turned on although I cant imagine theyd be hided.

Problem solved!

I alt-tabbed out of the game while it ran, then saw little button in the Vista explorer bar called "Compatibility Files". Clicking on that revealed the entire list. I imagine the compatibility button would be there even without the game running.

I was just about to say check compatibility files :p
