When my brother tried to install SMACX in his new laptop in June, he got a message to the effect of "cannot install without Alpha Centauri". I didn't see it myself, alas, and so cannot give the exact wording. When he tried again three weeks ago, I dug up my vanilla SMAC CD and he tried installing it first. I didn't really think it would work, but it did, though I had to fiddle around with compatability settings and such awhile to get it to run.

This is mostly FYI for Petek. I never see much about Vista issues- and you know they must happen. The same SMACX cd installed fine on my 2002/2003-vintage XP machine...

Hi Buster's Uncle! Hadn't seen you around until recently.

I always appreciate someone bring up an unusual tech problem. However, in this case, perhaps I'm missing something. Did your friend try to install Alien Crossfire on a system that didn't already have Alpha Centauri? If so, the error message was expected: AC has to be present before Crossfire will install. Did the problem lie elsewhere?

Yes, but I'd have sworn it was a combo disk like the planetary pack- I can't be sure because I downloaded it to replace a scratched-up original.

I just checked, and terran.exe is also on the cd. However, when I autoplay it, it indeed only offers to install or play SMACX, so you're probably right. As I said, I have a vanilla SMAC cd from late 1997- it was already installed when I tried it, and that would explain why it worked for my machine. Thanks anyway.
