The Hall of Fame Team would like to welcome new players, and welcome back old vets, to the 21st running of the Civfanatics Civ IV Hall of Fame Challenge Series.

HOF Challenge XX was a successful and competitive instalment of the series, won by @Swordnboard with a total of 69 points and 6 #1s, @Dhoomstriker was second with 54 points and 3 #1s (and also broke the system thanks to shenanigans with vassals!). @Powerfaker was third with 31 points.

11 players participated and 3 different players gained #1s.

HOF Challenge XXI is a collection of 10 games running from 1st October 2019 to 31st March 2020. The winner will be the person who collects the most points (10 for 1st in each individual game, down to 1 for 10th). Progress and results for all games can be found at http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/challenge.php. There are individual threads for each game in the Challenge Series forum so head on over and check it out.

In each game of Challenge XXI you will play as one of the two Egyptian leaders (your choice each time).
  • The Egyptian UB is The Obelisk, a Monument that can turn two citizens into Priest specialists; this can give an early :hammers: boost and bring in a Great Prophet early, should you want to pursue a religion and build shrines (or bulb Theology, which through Theocracy can give your early armies a nice boost).

  • The Egyptian UU is The War Chariot, a Chariot with 5 :strength: instead of 4 and immune to first strikes; it can be very good in an early rush.
Both Egyptian Civs are Spiritual whilst Ramesses II is Industrious and Hatshepsut is Creative.

For those unfamiliar with the CFC Hall of Fame (HOF), we encourage you to try the challenge as a way of introducing yourself to the HOF. The Challenge series is just one feature of the HOF. A Gauntlet series of games is run monthly. In addition you can simply submit any of your games to the HOF. All valid games are recorded to a database and ranked under various categories. The HOF enables you to compare your progress against other HOFers over all time or simply track your own progress. In other words, the HOF is as competitive as you want it to be.

In addition, the CFC HOF offers two ongoing challenge/achievements called the Quatromasters and Elite Quatromasters which can be found here. All valid game submissions to the HOF apply toward your progress to these long-term achievements. Are you up for the challenge? :)

All of the games need to be played using version 5 of the BUFFY mod (BUFFY-3.19.005), found here. Standard Hall of Fame Rules apply to all games.

OMG, got a new laptop, and after all these years I have finally figured out how to made the mod work with Win 10. Granted, I could have spent that time getting a law degree or something, but which would be more fun anyway?

If anyone else is having problems with getting Win 10 to work with the mod and Steam files, PM me and I'll do what I can to help out.

Game on! :D

Right, it's considered a "beta" for the game, but I think it's exactly the same other than the fact that Steam decided to update some of the multiplayer aspects (someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that, I know for Civ III this was true). I personally haven't had problems with seeing saves and scores, but your mileage may vary.

Remember to remove the read only tags on all of your civ files in the steam directory as well as for Buffy, and set all of the executables to "run as administrator" if you are running Win 10. Someone said that you couldn't run the game directly from the Steam library (to be fair I think those instructions were for Vista or Win 7), but if you change the flag on the executable itself it actually does run properly from the library itself.

That's correct - you should have no issues with saves etc.

Gave it a few tries, installed the beta version, changed the read-only setting and changed the run-as-administrator setting, but then I'm getting warnings about some audio capture device, and when selecting the Buffy mod I get an error saying that ....\mods\odds\buffy* is an invalid directory. That directory does not exist, and the buffy mod was just in ..\mods\buffy*.

Anyway, I won't get a high score anyway, so no big deal.

Oh, it's not about the score, it's about the fun! ;)

I would remove buffy (now that you have set all of the steam files) and reinstall it. It may not be the magic cure, but I did that during my time installing and it works fine after. I also installed it in the actual Steam mods folder (instead of the My Documents one) since the first time in My Documents it wasn't working either (but this could have been due to the other issues I was having).

Map Finder gave me this, then I realized I had the settings on the wrong difficulty.
