War Carts

Any thoughts on countering war carts when Sumeria starts real close in multiplayer? I tried to do it last night as Japan beelined bronze working then archery had an encampment I still got overwhelmed. I didn't even get enough time to build a wall.

I wonder if ignoring everything except slingers and upgrading them archers asap would be more effective.
Actually, no idea. I've never played a game where Sumeria wasn't the 1st or 2nd ban.

Unless you got strategically safe land, you are pretty much screwed if a few carts come your way. Archers are not that good against them, and will die in two hits if on flat terrain. I actually played Sumeria in multiplayer recently, and the third guy i came to conquer had an army of archers ready. Basically any archer i could reach died instantly. Maybe if the archers were on hills behind a river they would have stood a better chance.

The biggest problem is how weak cities are. Two war carts can easily take down a city, even if it has a couple defenders, simply by attacking the city and saving their heals for opportune times. If you could get your city str up, that would be really helpful, but having a warior in your city is not enough. In my game, i just killed the archers in front of the city, ignored the ones behind it, and attacked the city.. This is made even easier with the +7 vs ranged perk that carts can get. which makes them only take 15 damage per archer shot.

Yes, Barding. Most of the time my cavalry get that promotion first, and Crew Weapons for the artillery, which does a similar job, always.

Atleast the war carts make decent defenders once they are obsolete because of their speed.

Actually, they promote to Knights in the middle game and Tanks in the late game. These are both solid promotions for those eras.
