I stared my first regent level game. I had previosly crushed the AI on standard maps at chief and warlord. Now it was time to even the playing field. I was planing on the science/culture route so I chose the greeks. All was going well, I had made about 1000 gold selling techs and hit the middle ages at about 500 BC. My land was crap though. I had no horses no Iron and only 1 luxury with 8 cities on a large map, but I did have 4 gold spots in the mountians. Egypt was my neighor and was growing into my land. I asked then to move their troops or declare war and there it was up on my screen Egypt has declared war on you. This is the point I turned a winning game into a lost game. Egypt had more cities about the same techs as me (a little behind but not much) and they had horses. I thought my hoplites could hold out.... they didnt. Even with 3 per city they fell fast to the chariots and horsemen the egyptions threw at me. I thought I could hold my own and move in for the kill when they had wasted troops on me... no dice I lost 2 cities pretty quick. I only really had 2 good production cities and they cranked archers every other turn threw the golden ages. If only I would have let egypt alone and absored their land through culture I would have been fine.
But a very good lesson was learned. If you have a path, follow it and stay out of war if you dont have the goods to fight. Dont give the comp any reason to declare war on you, even if you think you are well defended. Maybe if I had walls in my smaller cities if I had built city walls but dont count on it. Never let the computer declare war on you.
