Can you just attack some without it affecting any trust/future potential to make treaties ??

ie if you dont currently have any treaties and you attack then the message comes up "do you really want to do this, this will cause war"

if you then attack is this ok or do you have to declare war beforehand??

would it be seen as a sneak attack and therefore not acceptable\

Declaring war before hand is always better than a sneak attack. If you do sneak attack them, then they'll tell the other civs and you won't be able to get 20 turn deals with them. However, if you declare first, it's 'honorable', and the civs won't take offense to it. I.e. - your rep will not be trashed and the war won't affect your ability to make 20 turn deals.

It's possible (I don't remember, it's been so long since I've sneak attacked anyone) that instead of being unable to make 20 turn deals, the AI won't sign RoPs with you.

But the gripping hand of it is, you can do whatever you want to a civ if it does not currently have and will not in the future have any contact with the other civs. If you can destroy them before they meet anyone else, then there's on one to tell the other civs what you've done to them, right?

I usually do the sneak attack thing, and I've had civs approach me for trade a few turns after signing a peace treaty, specifically the ones that I was at war with.

It does seem kind of random though, I've also had civs that I was at war with sign non-trade agreements with other civs against me - then approach me to sign a right of passage agreement.

If you have any units inside an AI's cultural borders when you declare war on them (whether it's via diplomacy or simply just attacking), then this will destroy your reputation with the AI you declared on, and any AIs they know or subsequently come into contact with.

Regardless of whether or not you have a Right-of-Passage agreement with the AI, such a declaration will be considered a breach of RoP and you'll never be allowed to sign RoP with this, or any other, AI [known by the one you're attacking].

Also make sure declaring war doesn't:
- Break any existing trade deals (gold per turn, luxury or resource trades).
- Break any trade routes to other AIs you're trading goods to. Say you declare on your neighbour, and you're trading with an AI on his far side. You only have a land route to your trade partner. All of a sudden this trade is cut off by the war declaration. Your trade partner will no longer accept per-turn goods from you. He will continue to accept per-turn gold.

Of course, if you just plan on sweeping all aside in a blaze of death and destruction, ignore all that messing around and just plough right in :satan:

It's possible to sign ROP with other nations in spite of that. It just comes at a higher prize compared to if you have a clean reputation.

The victim will never again sign a rop with you.

...the gripping hand of it...

From god's eye to yours...

You can attack someone on your ground or neutral ground without any rep problems, though the civs attitude towards you will be worse, of course. that only effects UN votes, though, so worry not about it...

Do you have any idea how many years I've been using that expression to have no one understand what it means? :crazyeye:

I have a bad habit of smacking people on my land when I can't get the "Move or declare war" option in the diplomacy screen. How does this work out for rep? I saw the remark about "on your ground"... got me to thinking is all.

@Turner. A ROP is a 20-turn deal... it's no different from a lux trade.

@darski. So long as you have no outstanding deals and no troops in their territory, you can declare war any way you want w/o affecting your rep.

good, thank you. I was going to do it anyway of course but at least it is mitigated by this info.

I always wanted a command that said "shoot across bow"

I really think there is a difference between 20 turn gpt/lux deals and ROP deals. I think if you screw up a gpt/lux deal, you won't get one again.
I have however done multiple ROP rapes in 1 game.
