Warfare tactics

But then in 650 AD they decided to attack, is this many units normal for spain on regent in that time span??

(there are 25 all together but i had to chop off the others to make the pic fit on the post...)

What was i doing wrong or was i just out of my depth to begin with?

I was having to build wealth in two cities because i couldnt afford to build more units. And i was building temples to try and fight of the culture of the Spaniards.

I havent carried on from here as i was going to try out any suggestions you all have...

If i get none i will just post the remains of the not so mighty English Empire in a day or so.

its hard to see what units you have and what you have in your cities. From the 2nd screen shot looks like you have a lot...5 or so units, what are they? all spears? Presuming you have similar amounts in the other cities you might be able to fight off the blue guys.

All the blue guys coming past coventry are archers....it looks as if spain has no access to iron up there. A couple of swords in Coventry could pick them off as the approach. Attack a group of more than one in a stack...then you rsword is'nt left out in the open after he wins. One little archer won't cause to much harm...maybe a vet warrior or a horsman can take the last archer (a horse can retreat back to the city).

The biggest trouble is in the south. There looks to be at least 3 blue swords. A couple of your spears on those mountains would have seen the swords coming and with the defense bonus of 100% it would be 3sword attacking a 4spear.

Another thing. If you had a spear sitting on those mountains and seen all the swords coming. You can be 99% sure that Spain had evil intentions, there is nobody else spain could be going for, and i never see the ai moving attack units unless the are going to attack. If there was another civ to the north of you then it is possible they were just passing through to move up there to attack, but there was'nt it was just you and spain.

Also AI tends to attack when it runs out of room to expand. Since your island was just about full thats another reason to doubt the AI peace deal.

They have 15 cities to your 5!!!!! The AI has dictated the terms here from the beginning. You were probably a bit to cautious at the start to have been so out expanded. At regent level the AI can only build at the same pace as you so, the AI beat you there as well, it should have been 7 cities each. You probably even could have had 15 and spain 5 cities.

Which of you cities produced all the settlers. The only one that looks capable of producing at a semi decent rate is London, the others have to much jungle to grow fast or produce fast enough.

You needed lots of workers to clear that jungle. I not to sure what you did but I would have got some workers clearing jungle around either Warick or Nottingham, to make those land good enough so they could produce settlers faster. I would focus another city to build a military. (all this stuff is in the Sirian trainer thread, it is well worth a read (lots of reading though)).

You also lost your iron supply east of London, since it is on a mountain that should have been easy to defend with spears. Iron is utmost important early in the game, otherwise irs archers vs swords.

Again if you had a sword or two with a spear defending on a mountain, the sword can attack a stack of enemies and pick them off without moving off the mountain, avoiding attacking a single unit if that leaves you exposed to counter attack.

Again, i highly recommend you read the training thread. Start of games make the difference, if you at least read up to 0AD it will help big time.

Hope this helps (and make some sort of sense, my biggest post yet on civfanatics:crazyeye: )

thanx for the help digger. I had got a few more towns at the beginning but they were destroyed very early on. As for the siting of my towns in the jungle, i had no other option really, they are just there to slow down the end of my civilisation. I have started a different game but only on warlord and i am doing a lot better than normal, but the game is heading for a massive war between me and the english so it could be fun...

I will start reading that thread and see if i can remember the tips it gives.

One thing you *might* could have done differently earlier:
I noticed some nice flood plains to the south. If you had put a city there, you could have made it a worker factory to compensate for your jungle...
