Warlords is MUCH slower than Civ 4, I don't understand

This problem started today, when I noticed a huge FPS drop while playing a totaly new game in Civ 4: Warlords. I had not touched the settings, yet for some reason warlords was playing extremely sluggishly

I have tried playing civ 4 vanilla after finding this, and it works smooth and fine. The settings are EXACTLY Identical, why is warlords running slowly though? Ingame, everything crawls at a low FPS and loading times seem to be much bigger now.

it might be somewhat slower because of the new content, but not MUCH slower. hmm. try lower settings for warlords...
