Is Civ VII most boring version?

IPs in Modern Age are pathetic. They get killed by a few starting units. They're not much better in Exploration and only pose any sort of threat in Antiquity.

Their strength needs to be tweaked for sure.

Yeah I'm looking at the spearmen on one of my CS island like yeah, it's gonna be one bloodsoaked knight that does you all in. So I did the support military action. They built, you guessed it, another spearman. Great job guys.

I still have issues with the notifications in the bottom right. Something doesn't seem right. I think they tried to make them less intrusive, problem is I tend to ignore them entirely, and some of those messages are quite important.
This is actually a big problem I have with the game. I really did enjoy the gossip notifications in VI because it helped keep me up to date on what my friends/enemies were up to, so I at least had a general idea of what was going on in the rest of the world, but now, I feel that if I want to know what the other civs are up to I have to physically go look at their cities myself (and unlike VI where I could look at a city and quickly identify all the key areas of importance, here the cities all tend to look the same and very cluttered). So it's just another thing that makes the game feel very disconnected to me.

While on the subject, I often feel disconnected from my own cities, because while the game tells you when a city can start production on a new building/unit/whatever, it neglects to tell you WHAT it was you just finished building, which is REALLY annoying, because sometimes I just can't remember. It's such a simple thing, and I have no idea why this is.

This mod will fix that. I'm running 25 mods so far and they have made the game so much better already. None of them change the gameplay or stats at all, they just fix the UI and give you information.

Thanks for letting me know, though tbh I'm taking a break from the game until more work is done on it (and I get a new computer that can handle it more efficiently). It just boggles my mind how this wasn't in the base game (or any of the early updates).

Maybe hoping for fundamental game mechanics to change between ages was a little ambitious. But like a lot about the game, this just feels time/resource constrained in development. Like they went with the same mechanics with different art three times because that required the least developer time.
I mean the initial marketing around ages was that we would be getting different mechanics between ages to differentiate them. So I don’t think that’s an ambitious request.

Frankly the eras at this point really just seem to he handicaps for AI that are never capable of catching up

I feel like there were some missed opportunities to make eras feel more distinct.

For instance, no military units feel like they revolutionize the battlefield. Imagine if every unit type had a thematic power spike at some point in the game (such as the niter bonus being doubled for gunpowder units, or modern infantry coming online a tier before landships and having extra strength against tier 1 cavalry).

Custom difficulty largely undoes any handicap effect the AI receives from era transition.

Where's the spearmen? I know, they weren't used much in Civ 5 or 6 but Cavalry is to strong in 7 and I feel like an anti-cav infantry would be good here
