Warlords mplayer - does it work for anyone?

All,

As some of you know, my friend and I are trying to play mplayer games of Warlords. His machine is a Mac (not sure what kind since I don't follow Apple) so we constantly run into OOS errors (out of sync).

Anyway, I had someone reply to my other thread how mplayer never works for them and they both have Macs. Has anyone gotten Warlords to work for mplayer?

If not, how can a company release software like this since mplayer is something Firaxis was promoting from day 1? It makes me wonder if Aspyr fully tested.

Curious

Sorry if this hijacks the thread a bit. I am currently experiencing this problem when playing with my girlfriend. We currently have 2 Macs (both laptops) and a PC (desktop) in the house. I got a copy of Warlords for the PC and for the Mac and have been trying to multiplay but keep getting the OOS error message. You said someone had good luck with 2 mac copies in a previous thread? Could you point me in the direction of this thread, or can someone verify this. Other wise I'll pick up a second copy of the PC and *shudder* dual boot.

Firaxis is not responisble for the Mac version, only Aspyr Media. There are several areas for MP to go wrong. One is coding. The majority of errors can be contributed to user ignorance.

(1) Are you behind a router?
(2) Is an internal firewall turned on?
(3) Are you behind an external firewall?
(4) If behind a router, do you have the correct ports open?
(5) Does each person involved have their application patched to the same version?

hi,

i'm having the same problem with my friends. I have a mac and everyone else a pc. we have turned off all firewalls, we're all running from the same router (all in one guys basement) and we're all running on the latest patch version. we play for a while and it's fine but as early as maybe 20 turns into the game we get out of sync errors where I'm the one who went out of sync. I quit out and get back into the game but it happens every single turn after the first time. Someone PLEASE respond to this and offer any help at all, I'm desperate to not have to deal with this oos error anymore.

thanks,
scotty

That is exactly what happened to us when we tried mplayer with a mac player in the group. It has nothing to do with routers/firewalls/etc and is a known problem with the Mac port (I received an email from Aspyr stating such). Their email said something like "If/When we have a patch....."

To me, this is very poor programming and if I owned a mac, I would be furious

Thx

IMHO, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do, except play against other mac players or PBEM games w/ your PC friends. Even though the PC & Mac apps are patched to the same version, there are 'bugs.' The app is not a hybrid, built w/ compatibility in mind. Two different companies were involved, one for PC designed and built it while a Mac company translated it over to the Mac platform.

Your only recourse is to inform the Mac pubishing company (Aspyr Support Page ) and hope company resources are available to address it. I believe Aspyr is prepping for a new PC update, so this is something they could address. But, they'll have to be able to find the problem, IF one exist with the Mac version.

Odd that their support site doesn't acknowledge it, in any way.

I wish I would have saved the email I got from them about a month ago.

They didn't tell me right away it was a problem but after a couple of email exchanges, they eventually said it was a known problem and if/when a patch comes out, they will address it

1. Play on all Macs or all PCs. I realize this isn't always an option, but I've tested it in multiple versions of warlords, and either method of mplayer doesn't appear to run into the OOS issues.

2. Downgrade Warlords on all Macs and PCs that want to play. Ignore 2.08. This works, and you can use Macs and PCs together quite happily. Other than being pestered by the download dialog every time I start a multiplayer game, I don't even notice the difference between 2.08 and 2.00. We've been playing many multiplayer games across both platforms since we donwgraded the version, with no OOS issues.

Good luck.;)
