Ok, I've noticed that its just a pain in the a$$ to be a nice peaceful builder in this game after you leave the chieftan difficulty. Here's my question, (I'm using the persians) how long do you stay in despot gov? and why do you leave it?

I always leave Despot to Republic, so I can decrease corruption, have much more food and cash, and can rush improvements for gold. If you build a strong infrastructure (roads and city improvements), you can build a big enough military and place them properly to avoid a lot of war. If you're weak, you'll be a victim of unwanted war all the time. When I've moved up the levels, I get smacked around for a while until I can figure out how to be more efficient (and when to start a war for gain).

I get out of despot as fast as I can. Usually to Republic, but sometimes to Monarchy, depends on the situation. Peaceful buildup - I go to republic. In a war - to monarchy.

Thrawn is right despotism should be ditched as soon as possible, personally I will try to go straight to Republic then Democracy (I play as Babylonians so anarchy when swtiching gov is not a problem) - sometimes I will go to Republic via Monarchy if I do not have the tech for Republic and am not likely to get it for a little while.

Despotism has the highest corruption level so will hold you back - Republic is less so and Democracy even less (although as you move up these govs you will have to pay for more unit support). Democracy also gives workers a boost of 50% in time to complete tasks (with nationalism tech) which makes a big difference.

Democracy (and to a lesser extent Republic) have war weariness problems so if war is an issue then monarchy is better. But all are better than despotism.

If I understand your concept of warmongering correctly, you want to wage war.

If you are going to wage early war, there is nothing wrong with depotism. It is not the best form of government true, but it has one advantage over the rest! You get 4 unit support for your towns (cities, size 6 and less)

Monarchy would only give you 2 unit support for towns and only really becomes useful in the late game when you have metros (12+cities)

So if you want to wage early war, I suggest despotism. Set your science to zero after researching horse back riding or ironworking and attack! 6 initial cities should be enought to completely destroy the AI at this level.

That's if you want to be a warmonger...

I generally play a religious civ but recently I experimented with persians on emporer level. I had to restart a bunch of times before getting my build order down. For these guys, I went barracks, settlers, granary(in my main city), workers and that is about it.

Having vet units over regular units(or maybe just having the barracks) discourages the ai from harrasing you. Also, I went for an early despostism war to secure luxaries. Making a beeline for iron working and pumping out immortals at that point is what you want to do.

Despotism has such a high corruption rate. And then on top of that it has the two food, two commerce, two shields limit. I get out of it ASAP

There's no hardcore limit to f/s/c in Despotism, it's just that if a tile is producing more than two of anything, it produces one less.

Just a quick not on slow growth of depostism. If you are warmongering, you don't mind. At Emperor level you probably plan to acquire most of your cities, not build them. Also to fast growth mean unhappiness. Don't want that. Building temples means not building attacking units.

to kb2tvl:

I've played a lot with the Persians.. My deity strat would be to build as many veteran warriors as possible. Research iron and then set science to zero. I upgrade warriors to immortals on a regular basis. I will also keep in connecting, disconnecting the iron, which means I'm building only warriors all the time. This works well right through the early game and set you up for conquest/domination in the late deity game.

Same in my current Persians deity game. Built 15 warriors, upgraded to Immortals, kicked out Japanese and half of the Babilonians.

Two heroes one FP, one GL. I wish I had the third but it came later. Until Education I had no probelm with the other civs.

Yep immortals are great of early dominance. They don't provide that many leaders unfortunately.

Another strat I've seen thats useful is to have only one city with a barracks connected to iron. You use is only for upgrade.

I normally don't rush wonders. Playing the Persians, I find that the Babs normally get the GL. I just wait and take it from them. I then uses my leader for the War Academy and possibly the Workshop. With those two wonders I easily win the warmonger game.

I've posted a few leaders strategies, but for Persians, I slip in a few archers and horses, just for leaders!
