To sending out a warning to other in quiet frustration.

I was playing a game as Arabia and trying to make money of trade routes.

Since there was a large desert between me and the desirable area i decided to apt for Habors insteads of roads to connect cities. They only cost the same as a 3 square road.

So I had finally build up most of the infrastructure and expect to finally be making money of the routes, then my gold starts going into large negative.

The stupid automated workers had build 4-5-6 tile long roads to connect cities that were already connected! So frustrating!!

I didnt have a save before i automated them so I ended up abandoning my 2 hr game. SUCKS!

Not so surprised. I never automate workers in any Civ version, too much strange behaviours. In CiV I don't have so many workers so its not that hard to handle manually.

I don't know what happened to you, but it is my experience that automated workers do know when a city is connected by harbors and will not build roads to them. In fact, I wait to make sure the cities actually show they are connected before automating workers, because they will not stop building a road just because you have started building a harbor. You might double check that you really had harbor connectivity and weren't deceived somehow.

Me neither, for the same reason!

Well they need to give the workers options

General Settings
1. No chop Forests
2. No chop jungles
3. No Roads
4. No replacing other improvements

Worker specific orders
1. Road to X
2. Resource development
3. Local Automation (This city only)
4. General Automation

I don't want to threadjack, but it is semi related to this topic and not worth a new thread.

I'm playing a huge earth map and have cities in both North America and South America but they are separated by a mountain, so I can't build a road connecting to my capitol in South America.

So do I need to build harbors in each North American city or can I build one harbor in one city and then connect to the other North American city to the harbor city via roads? Although I think it will be cheaper in the long run just to build harbors in each city with only 3 maintenance. It's a huge map so my cities are spaced far apart. Seeing as they are well over 3 tiles apart, harbor seems cheaper. But I'd still like to know for mechanics reasons. Also, one North American city is an inland city, so I can't build a harbor there. Can I connect it to a harbor city with a road to connect it to my trade network?

Also I ran into a bug where a barbarian camp popped up on one of my roads. I wiped the camp out, but the road graphic disappeared. The game still said there was a road even though the graphics did not show one, and my units did not get proper road movement moving over that tile. I'm not sure if the city still counted as being connected to my empire or not. What I did was remove the road, and rebuild it so the graphic showed back up and my units can move over it properly.

I did that and it worked.

I was looking for that menu, but found on a more general menu about it.
was also my idea of fixing it.

The option I was back is, improve only this city. That was great, let me build a worker, assign him to a city, and let it go

There seems to be a bug with how harbours, roads and trade routes interact that Firaxis seemingly won't fix.

If you have a city connected to your capital by road and then you build a harbour you seem to get the "trade route" disconnected noise and message.

Likely, the AI workers think the city is not hooked up and tries to rectify that.

... this one is correct.

I'm still not getting a city is connected message. I'm not sure what's wrong. Does my capitol need a harbor too? That's impossible of course since my capitol is not on the ocean.

edit: okay I had to build a harbor on the continent with my capitol. It isn't automatic. The tooltip isn't very clear on that.

edit2: I ended up quitting that game because huge maps are so boring and slow. But I do have one more question.

Do I even need to build roads anymore? If the minimum space between cities is 4 tiles, and a harbor only costs 3 maintenance, roads are going to be more expensive to maintain than a harbor right? So the only roads I need to build are to inland cities. Of course roads help get troops to the front line faster, but defending in this game is a joke usually. I don't need the extra time that much.

Just don't do it in Civ5. I have to confess that when I get bored with worker micromanagement in Civ4 later in the game I automate them out of sheer boredom (I know that's not the best strategy, but it's no fun directing workers once there are more than about 10 of them). So you get visually horrible road/railway spam, but who cares much? It's not boring me to death or costing money. [1]

But if you do that in Civ5 it will kill you, if only because roads will drain your treasury. (Personally, I think workers should be abolished entirely in favour of a public works system like that in CTP. And that would also benefit the AI players a lot - one less unit to have to factor into the appalling traffic management problem it has.) [2]

[1] But I hate it in the lategame Civ4 when automated workers start demolishing cottages they've just built to build farms. Then they demolish the completed farms to build cottages ad nauseam. At this point they have to be retired, that's just a job creation project...

[2] Blooming hell. This would also remove the daft disjunct with Workboats and Workers that we have inherited from Civ4. Like how does a workboat instantly create an offshore platform, a fishery, whatever, while a worker takes many turns *and remain reusable afterwards*? OK, the boat destroys itself. In a way that is cool, means you don't have to manage it afterwards. But the boats are closer to the CTP schema, the workers are original Civ. I think it should go one way or the other, and I'd go with CTP.

Solution: don't automate workers. Too bad this is more of what civ5 lovers hate about civ4.....micromanagement.

In regards to building roads or harbors, I think one needs to make a decision on what the worth is of having a way to move units (translation: military) quickly from one point to another. So, for example, I don't mind a 4-tile road over a harbor for the benefit of quick movement.

Additionally, when one gains railroad, does that benefit automatically benefit trade routes connected only by harbors?

If you have a harbor on both continents and the capital has a road with the harbor on it's continent that should be sufficient. It just seems to me, that the connect message sometimes comes 1 (or even some) move/s late?!
I think it depends of the level, whether defending is a joke or not. Roads have the advantage that you can get together your deffers quicker. But it's correct what you
say about the cost - harbor can be cheaper and is still sufficient for a traderoute.
