I've read a lot about increasing your city size using the "We Love 'ruler' Day"

How do you make this occur, and why is is that sometimes they are canceled? I do not have any unhappy citizens, many happy ones and yet rarely have this festival.

Someone please explain to me how this works.

The cty has to be at least a size 3 and it needs to have no unhappy people and at least as many happy people as content people. So, if you have 4 happy and 5 content, no WLTLD, 5 happy and 5 content, WLTLD.

It also has to be in effect for a turn before you will get the growth in the city. The growth in the city is actually one of the things that can end the WLTLD celebrations since the new people may make the city have too many content people to keep the celebratoins going.

To get and maintain celebrations:
1) Must be at least 50% of citizens happy
2) No unhappy citizens
3) 3 or more citizens in city

To use this for one additional citizen each turn:
4) Republic or Democracy only
5) must have at least one sheaf of food surplus

Regarding your cancelled celebrations: As citizens are added, you might be either adding an unhappy citizen, or dropping below 50% happy. To maintain celebrations you should check your cities to make sure they still meet the criteria.

edit: Duke beat me to it

Have fun Gurney. With this abusive little trick, you will beat the game like a redheaded step child!

If you wish, take a look at Game OfThe Month. In the Gotm27 Spoiler Flatlander thread, I document the incredible gains in population this generates. And there are others who do better at it than I (Smash!) but they rarely tell the details, just the results.

I still don't understand. Could someone please elaborate on exactly how you do it!!!

How to DO it is get big trade production, marketplace, bank and any thing that makes citizens happy, get into democracy and then go crank up the luxuries in the tax rate (more happy citizens.) Then every city that has NO unhappy citizens, excess food production and at least 50% happy citizens will add a citizen each turn until one of those conditions is lacking. Celebration cancels as soon as there is ONE unhappy citizen OR food production goes to even or negative OR content citizens outnumber happy ones. Also remember the need for aquaduct to grow past 8 and sewers to exceed 12.

You see, it takes some preparation; it's not an automatic.

Running out of surplus food will not cancel the city celebrations, the city will just stop growing.

Little trick: sometimes you can use an elvii to push a city into celebrating, than put the elvii back to work and the city will continue to celebrate! :)

Wonders like Hanging Gardens and Mike's Chapel sure helps, and the first one is sometimes necessary if you plan to celebrate in republic.

I stand corrected, but what is the difference between not celebrating and not growing. Specifically, in democracy if I'm not adding citizens then what is the celebration result?

In fact, in democracy, once a city is maxed out on population it can support, there is no additional benefit to celebrating. From that point on, your only concern with that city is to ensure it does not become unhappy.

To get a high score and end the game very well, it's a smart maneuver to change Luxuries 3 turns before the last one (before conquering the world or the arrival of spaceshiP).

Many cities will start to make a We Love the Ruler celebration and it really helps getting points.:goodjob:

I didn't know that celebrations (unless in a non-representative gov) helped scores. IIRC only the amount of happy citizens can help the score, and you get them the instant you raise the lux-rate.

Well, when you get 'We love the ruler' days your population will rise quickly, which will improve your score. But I wouldn't do it 3 turns before the end of the game, but much earlier!

To get the highest score, max out lux on your last turn. The idea here it to create more "happy" people which are worth more points than content people. This assumes your population has already been "maxed out" AND is not directly related to WLTPDs. ie, you could be celebrating at 30 or 40% lux, but at the end game, you should put lux to 100% to create more happy people.
