I just installed the game and i noticed a couple of things wrong:
1. The sound on the opening movie cuts in and out.
2. All I can see are the eyes and the teeth of the Leaders.
and 3. When I start playing the game I cant see the terrain.
If I can get any help on this I would be grateful.

Try to install 1.09 patch if you haven't already. Got rid of the leader face/black terrain for me. The intro movies is probably a soundcard problem. Disable your soundcard and load the game to find out for sure. If it is update your drivers or buy a new soundcard.

Any other symptoms you can think of - it seems like you are running but with problems - such as slow game play, slow turns, CTDs, large save files, you play large / huge maps, blackterrain, xml hassles

it would be helpful to attach the dxdiag dump (go to start, click, type"dxdiag", let it run thro, press "save all information" - then attach it here

Stecoli-
I'm running on a Presario--2195us, 320M graphics card, otherwise probably pretty similar hardware (?)

From doing a lot of reading here, I'm not sure I have great news for you. Laptops with integrated graphics processors often have big problems with Civ4, especially if they don't support T&L (not sure about the 345M, but the 320M doesn't).

I installed the patch 1.09, and deleted the memory cache, and have a somewhat stable game but with stuttering movies and the black terrain problem. The terrain is fixable with a cheat (give yourself satellites in the worldbuilder). However, the game is still super slow/laggy, and with only 500mb ram nothing's really going to fix that.

Its worth looking around this forum, especially the stickies- it may be that you'll find people with your exact hardware have had more success than I have, or you can try some of the other fixes. There's a user-made patch by Harkonnen (sorry, can't find the link) that has been pretty successful, but I think it mainly helps people with speedy systems.
