What can I do to reduce crashes?

I'm thinking about trying to get back into Civ 5 with VP, but last time I played my games ended up crashing very frequently.
Now, I'm aware that it is a RAM related limitation of Civ 5 that you can't really do anything about, but I was wondering, what things can I do? Besides playing smaller maps, I'm a sucker for big maps with plenty of Civs.
Does reducing graphics quality have any effect? Playing windowed maybe? Strategic view? Does disabling events make a difference?

The last time I played was on a different PC, the current one is a lot beefier, but that probably doesn't matter much, but since I play older games a lot, I focused on having powerful individual cores in the CPU, if that makes any difference (I doubt it)

I am willing to try playing on smaller maps, but if there is anything I can do, I'd rather play on huge.

(This whole thing pushed me to try Civ 6, but I didn't really get into it as much as I did in Civ 5, I found myself yearning for VP again)

I think unless you use too many extra mods which can cause mod conflicts or eat up too much memory, the crashes are totally luck-depended.

I play huge Tectonic maps which are actually huger than standard huge and with 18-22 civs and I games are almost never crashing on my 2 computers. Yes, the AI turns get slower in the late game, but I haven't had a crash for ages.

Maybe you will also be lucky with your new machine.

I do not reduce the graphics drastically (and I never play in the Strategic view), but of you experience crashes again, maybe this can help?

Maybe one of the mods you use causes crashes. Try running VP only. I've been playing Civ5 with and without VP for many years on 5-6 PCs/laptops and honestly I don't remember any serious crashes except from those caused by mods like Really Advanced Setup. It may be also your Windows configuration (drivers, background tasks, even antivirus software, who knows, a long time ago my system randomly crashed because of... a faulty PS/2 mouse :). If possible try running Civ on a freshly installed Windows 10 with good graphics drivers and see what happens. Good luck!

vyyt do you play with any extra mods?

I just completed my first game, and it didn't even crash once, on a huge map with 17 civs, so I guess the new PC did make a huge difference.
The old one had... strange issues, like blue screening after coming out of standby mode on occasion, so I suppose it makes sense.

Large maps, high difficulty and late game is usually a combination that cause trouble.
All these increase the number of units and tile improvements on the maps.
Add extra mods and it gets worse.

What are your specs ?

Intel I7 9700k CPU
32gb RAM
RTX 2080 Ti
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB

I had a lot of money saved up when I bought these parts, so I kinda went all in, as it turns out, having your own income (even if it's not that much), and no real hobbies outside of PC gaming meant that I was saving up quite a lot of money.
The older one had some sort of I5 CPU, I don't really remember which, 16gb of RAM, a GTX 1060, and a fairly old 2TB HDD
