what causes resources to deplete? also is there any way to predict how long a resource will last?

Often when playing a game I'd have like two sources of say oil and I'd trade one source while using the other, but then one source gets depleted and its me who loses the oil first (not the one whom I traded with).

Also, is there any way to cancel a trade peacefully with another civ?

And how do you cancel a trade after 20 turns? Often times I'd find that the deals last longer than 20 turns and I don't see how I can stop it...

It is random. You can see how often each resource is likely to deplete in the editor.

The trigger is hooking a road up to them. They won't deplete if no road is hooked up.

There is no way to cancel a treaty without a major rep hit before 20 turns. If you want to do it (or after 20 turn) open diplomacy and choose "Active Deals".

They get used up - depleted. :) It's a random thing in the game and some resources, like uranium, have a higher chance of depleting. Others, like horses, never deplete.
The amount of each resource on the map is fixed - if a coal deposit becomes depleted, it reappears in another spot on the map in the same turn. So always look around just in case it reappeared in your empire on a non-roaded square.
You can cancel trade agreements by going to the diplomacy advisor, opening the screen with the civ you're trading with and clicking on "Active". Then just click on it to remove it.
If you cancel before the 20 turns is up you take a serious hit to your reputation and its unlikely any civs will easily enter into trade agreements again.
In the "Preferences" screen, you can click "Always Renegotiate" and you'll get a chance to end trade agreements and treaties when the 20 turns are up.

Thanks! but if you don't hook up the resource then you can't use it... so are you saying to not hook up multiple strategic resources? Hrm... an interesting strategy! I'm learning so much every day!

Wow thanks for the detail! I couldn't find that agreement box for the longest time.

Ever hear of the strategic petroleum reserve? If you have 2 sources of oil within your borders, don't hook them up immediately. I'd even consider pillaging a roaded square with oil on it. Refining doesn't allow you to build battleships, tanks, or planes. Hook one up when you need to. Leave the other tile unconnected. After all, if you sell your 2nd source of oil to the Russians, you may face Russian tanks at some point- tanks you helped build! Then if your resource gets depleted, you have a spare oil tile. Also, immediately after the "this source of xxxx has been depleted" message pops up, the "we have discovered a new source of xxxx!" message will pop up if it is inside your borders, which means you only need be looking at the screen, not have to search for it.

In short, I don't sell extra iron until I don't need it. Plenty of civs will lag behind you, so that you can make money from selling horses or saltpeter. Also, if a civ has horses, I don't sell them chivalry. If they don't have horses, I'll sell them chivalry but not horses. Make sure you maintain the technological edge in your military!

3rdly, if you notice a strategic resource outside your borders in a remote area, go park a unit on it. That will stop another civ from colonizing it, until that tile falls within some civs borders.

Lastly... nobody can nuke you if you control all the uranium! :D

So if i hv a resource and it gets depleted during my trade treaty and the treaty isnt over yet so do i still get a rep hit?

I am not sure this one is in the spirit of the game. I don't do that. It's more like an exploit to me.

I didn't know depleted ressources reappered elswhere. We learn everyday :)

If the the ressource reappered on a connected square, would the deal I had with other civilizations be cancelled or would it be continued with the new source?

The deal would be continued with the new resource (as nothing has happened).
