What Difficulty level will you start at?

Whatever the setting is on the succession game or tournament game I play first. :)

If those take a few days to get going, then I'm not sure. I'm torn between playing chieftain so I can figure out the mechanics of everything as quickly as possible, or playing a higher level so I can get my butt kicked and marvel at improvements in the AI.

Whatever difficulty setting puts the player and the AI on equal footing.

Once I master that, it'll be time to start moving up.

The lowest setting, then move up

I'm going to start at the top -- see myself get owned in the worst way possible -- then the lowest -- see myself own as much as possible -- and then try the middle.

I will play at the most fair setting to get a feel for where I should be playing.

I'll just try a few games on the lowest to get the hang of major changes to the game.

Whatever is the setting where the A.I and human are equal in terms of A.I cheating. (or as equal as possible).

Regent, or whatever its called now.

Same here.

Of course the tutorial first! Just to have the feel when I play civ 3 the first time as the Roman 2 years back.

I'll play my first game in chieftan level then move up til I get to the level where neither the AI nor the human player gets any bonuses.

delete....double post

I would very much love to see a turn thread on how well or bad you're doing. :)
My first game will probably be like:
4000 BC - Turn 1
Doesn't look like a good spot to settle here.
Warrior N on the hill.
Hmmm, not good, only desert in sight. To the south must be better. But wait, what about the bears? Oh come on, don't be a chicken.
Settler S.
Ahhh, nice looking tiles. Hey that looks like a what, yes a lion! Uh oh, hope he doesn't see me. Close eyes, hit Enter.
IBT
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

ditto (10 char)

I'm sorry, but what is the (10 characters) reference? I keep seeing it but it's not making much sense to me

A post must contain at least 10 characters. Never ran into it myself, but just try it :)

A bit off topic, but well: your post needs to have at least 10 characters. And "dito" or derivates have less than 10 and would result in a nice error message from the vBulletin.
(e: /me = too slow...)

Chieftain...isn't prince the lower limit for getting registered here at cf?! :joke:

I as well really like even play. So I'll probably go for that level, or likely the level below that so I have room for mistakes.

Start easy. First game is to learn the new principles, so probably tutorial, in case it is too easy I stop it and start a more challenging game.
During installation read first part of manual. After first game another part, etc.

I'm such a wuss I think I will start at the lowest level until I find my way around. I might manage a game at the third level up (in CivIII terms) eventually.

I know my limits and don't enjoy the game being too hard - there's no fun in a game where the AI gets streets ahead of you, despite your best efforts, then crushes you like a fly. I like a fighting chance!
